Default So apparently I am a drummer...

I just got in from practicing with 2 younger guys at church. We practice late at night for whatever reason.
One of them I am teaching guitar and the other bass. It's a lot of fun. I am re-learning some stuff as well I am getting a better grasp on it myself by explaining it. I am doing a combination of teaching them practical things such as chord shapes, scales, arpeggios, as well as songs they want to learn.

I was trying to explain the upbeat and downbeat tonite to the guitar player. He just doesn't have rythym yet. I told him to buy a metronome of course.
I didn't have one with me tonite so I demonstrated by playing drums. I Suck at it. Haha It was cool though playing a simple 1n2n3n4 kinda thing and him and the bass player playing along. The bass player was trying to follow them downbeats with me. It really helped them out to hear it that way. They also seemed to have fun with it. I was dreading meeting with these guys, but now I am loving it. I am sure plenty of headaches are ahead.

Oooh yeah... the bass player wants to be a singer. He really wants to. Do you ever have someone really want to do something and they say "Tell me honestly what you think" but when they suck you can't be honest cause it means so much? That is what was going on. A couple of people have sugar coated it and told him he can sing. So here I am, and I am not a good singer myself, saying "Honestly... you suck" Well I said it nicer than that, but it sucked telling him that. I gave him some advice and worked with him what little I could. I am sure once he gets some confidence he will be fine...

That was just my rant. Thanks for reading...

I am having the same problem with our bass player. He wants to sing backup and lead on some songs, and he can't even get the bass lines right yet. I'm not too far away from blasting him over it.

There are very few bassists that I've heard that can play and sing lead. Maybe you can remind him of how difficult that really is to do well.

Either that or tell him he can go ahead and sing. Then, at your next performance, rig a huge smoke machine to blow smoke in his face at the very beginning of his first number. While he's startled and stops singing for a second you can pick up because "the show must go on!!" Then tell him you don't think it'll work because you can't have someone that lets little things like that interrupt him.
It's hard to be metal in girl pants.
