Seriously, protect your ears! My bandmates thought I was a geek because I would always wear earplugs to practice and even concerts. But now my old drummer has hearing loss, and so far I don't. It's not worth damaging your hearing, it never heals and only gets worse. Maybe for the gig of a lifetime, take the plugs out, but not for practice.

Putting a blanket over the drumkit (and not the drummer) is actually a good idea. We used to do this and it worked okay sometimes. You could also ask your drummer to play with brushes instead of sticks, but most of them won't because that changes the response (it's like asking you to play acoustic guitar all the time). You can also buy rubber drum and cymbal mufflers at any music store that work great.

It really sounds like you've got the highs turned up to be heard over the drummer's cymbals. You'll never beat him that way. Crank up the mids instead. A simple, cheap way to do this if your amp mids knob is not enough, is to buy a Tubescreamer pedal.

My hearing got damaged at the Dallas Guitar Show but not by my playing and not in the Mission Amps booth. It was the all star jam concert the night before the show ended. It was the loudest concert I've ever attended and it wasn't even good music...just a bunch of show offs.

My hearing has not been the same since then. I'm sure the volume levels were illegal.

Kinda ironic since the show's owner gave us such a hard time about playing our amp "to loud" when it wasn't loud at all and even threatened us...then the same guy let's his brother's band get up there and damage people's hearing.

There are pickups that exist like that and they don't sound like a blown speaker. There's plenty of definition in the notes too.
Messing with the amp is not the same as getting the sound right from the guitar.

True, the Invader has ~ 7/8/4 (just listened to it) and the Tone Zone ~ 8.5/8.5/5 and There is some note definition in the Invader, but it sounds a bit muddy to my ears, strong though, maybe good for metal.
