    Default EVH vs Custom Custom...

Probably not the first time that title has appeared. But bare with me. I know the pups aren't really THAT similiar, that they just put the custom custom in the same ballpark because of the magnet, etc.

My question: Is the Evenly Voiced Harmonics ALWAYS better than a Custom-Custom? Or only advisible if you're trying to nail Van Halen's sound?

Should I be thinking about getting an EVH instead of a custom custom, for use in a guitar (humbucker bridge / single coil neck) that would be used for a wide range of music from metallica to van halen to ac/dc to pantera to rage against the machine to the red hot chilli peppers to santana.

    Cheers,
    Dave

Depeding on what you are looking for. I'm not looking for a VH sound, but I love mine.

The CC is a great pup, but it isn't the same as you said. The CC is going to have more output, but it doesn't have the same type of aggression as the 78.

The CC is like a seriously overwound PAF, whereas the 78 is a bit overwound. ...both are A2 mag based, as you know.

It's early when I come up with more I'll post.

You'll use it, boy, and as long as you hate using it, you will use it more wisely than most men would. Wait. If ever you don't hate it any longer, then will be the time to throw it as far as you can and run the other way.”

I use them both and I have them in two very similar single HB Strats.

    It's like Luke said.

There's a nice review of both on this website: http://www.legendarytones.com

Lew once said that is feels familiar and I agree with that completely.

It has an aggressive, warm, squishy, fat, and articulate tone that I have never heard anywhere else. It really made my PRS sing!

I'm probably going to get another for my LP.

The two of them are so very different. The CC has more of a mid spike and smoother highs. The '78 (used to be the EVH) has more highs to it and a little less mids, but they're still there. Both can be very diverse, it's all in how you use them and which amp you use them with.

I have the CC in 2 guitars and I can pull anything off with it, from CCR to Metallica and everything in between. I A/B'd the CC and the '78 with Lew just to hear the differences. The '78 is more "chewy" as Lew put it. The CC is more "creamy" or "syrupy". Both are great pickups.

That's just the way I heard the diff too Eric. We compared them in two almost identical Strats, although the one with the 78/EVH was a little lighter in weight. Lew

I recall one of them being close to boat anchor weight. Both sound great though.

Yep! The black one with the 78 in it had been hacked by the previous owner.

It's basically a swimming pool under the pickuguard...but done with a chisel!

Well, I chisled the bridge pickup spot on my first electric to put a bucker in it. It was pretty bad, but it was also plywood. I was 15 and didn't have a router. Definitely a learning experience.

Were you able to clean it up some?

Look at it this way, you can put in any pickup configuration you want now. That's what I like about pool routes. How about a dual '78 config? I've been curious as to how a '78 neck sounds, just wanting to know what others think that have it.

Nah...I didn't clean it up at all. I wanted it for a test guitar and it's good enough. Looks awful under the picguard though. Lew
