    No way!

The band I used to play with only had me as a guitarist, we played metal, and having only one guitarist definitely worked.

I enjoy writing personally for more guitars when multi tracking at home, but still write plenty of single guitar riffs.

It all depends...on the type of music you're playing, and what you're trying to accomplish.

If you do go the single guitarist route, you better have a tight god damn rhythm section to back you up. Especially if you're going into solos and such.

Word. In some ways it does put more pressure on the rhythm section. I know they gotta be tight anyways but it just stands out more if theyre not clicking when there is no 2nd guitarist playing with them.

The hardest part about two guitar players is that you need to work together and make sure that tonally toes aren't getting stepped on.

I auditioned for a band a few years ago where the other guitar player was using a Line 6 spider and a Les Paul and his rig just chewed up frequencies. It made it hard to hear another guitar near the same fequency, but it also made it hard to hear the bass at times.

The only time I've been in a band where it worked was when we were both conscious of it and wrote parts accordingly. We also had to be careful when we were picking and trying gear that we weren't going for tones that were typically the others.

It's all about not stepping on each others toes.

its not mandatory but depending on the style you are trying to achieve it helps. so just go with what you want to do and who cares what anyone says about it.
