Curly and I heard Johnny Hyland demoing PRS single cuts at NAMM. He's really good...fast and clean. Maybe not as passionate and bluesy as some players but he was playing mostly Be Bop kinda stuff...scales and jazzy patterns and licks. A real good country virtuoso kinda player...red neck jazz. ( Of course, IMO, Danny Gatton was even better! ) But boy...if you have to go as far as Danny Gatton to find someone who's as good or better, that's saying something! Lew

Awesome vid, I hadn't seen this one before. Johnny is the man, no way around it. It's amazing how he can cover so many different types of tones so flawlessly.

I have had the pleasure of meeting and hanging out with Johnny Hiland a couple of times....let me state for the record that you will not meet a more humble, friendly, down-to-earth human being on the planet. The guy rips on the guitar - the most revelatory thing for me was watching his left hand....he absolutely tears up and down the fretboard, but his left hand looks like he is gently caressing the neck. It was a very important lesson for me as I tend to dig in fairly hard: don't press down any more than you have to - the lighter the touch, the cleaner/faster/better you'll play. Johnny Hiland is a beautiful person and an unbelievable player, and anytime you have the chance to check him out in person, do it!

i just got his CD for father's day and like it quite a lot ... lew is right, he is definitely on the same vector as danny gatton, just not as far along yet - but still light years ahead of alot of cats ... time will tell if he has composition chops to sustain interest for numerous albums and a coupla hours show ...
