The neck pickup in my les paul works so superbly with leads but when it come to chords, mainly power chords, the mud just won't do!
Recommend me a neck pickup that handle sweet smooth soloing but can handle rhythm without "mudding out".

You might need a pickup with less bass and more mids.
Alnico 2 Pro, Pearly Gates or Seth Lover.
Or 7.5K Alnico 4 Lindy Fralin.
I like the PGn myself...

Jazz neck or bridge version. I have a jazz bridge in my les paul neck and I like it a lot.. no more mud, but it still has character.

Another vote for the Pearly Gates neck model.
Pickups with alnico 2 magnets generally have softer bass, but also a sweeter high end - less bass but also less treble. The PGn has the softer bass but somehow retains the top end bite. It's not muddy!
use the bridge pickup. power chords sound best using the bridge pup.Originally Posted by britishgeetah

It may sound like the cliche Duncan fan response, but the Jazz is my favorite neck humbucker. It really does have a clarity, in addition to a singing lead tone.
Since I only believe in commenting on what I know...
I use to have an EMG60 in the neck of a warlock, it sounded amazing and got more use than the bridge. It's the only neck pickup I've ever loved.
Clear with perfectly smooth singing lead tones. Makes me miss that guitar....

Sorry, but I think that you need a single coil in the neck... The Jazz could be enough, though, or then you could try out some picups that house a sc in a humbucker cover. Just IMO.
There are two kinds of people in this world that go around beardless—boys and women, and I am neither one

With all the votes for the PGn, I would like to try one....
...but I do use the Jazz, Full Shred Neck, and DMZ Air Norton. All three are very non-muddy and sing nicely. I am not sure which is my favorite, but they all sound great in the neck!

wire the neck in parallel, paul gilbert style
