    Default Gibson/Epiphone V guitars?

Hey forum Bros, I'm looking to get a Gibson or Epiphone V. I've been checking Ebay and have seen some '67 epiphone V's going for good prices. Anyone here have one of these baby's to brag/bag on. I just want a good player that stays in tune and will most likely end up with a '59/Custom or '59/Distortion pups.
I'll have a Gibson Flying V straight into a Mesa, hold the BS please!!!!!

I had an Epiphone Goth V, with a Distortion set & EMG midrange booster, and that thing was hotter than hell! My only problem was the dinky frets. Aside from that, it sounded, looked, and played great!

V's are not know to be great at staying in tune. It's inherent in the design.

I've never had any trouble keeping a V in tune when using it. My V has locking nuts but still, it never goes out of tune.

I'd blame it on the headstock design (strings going over the nut at sharp angles). That said, I tuned that Goth V down to C, banged the hell out of it, and it stayed in tune fine.

So far the '67 epi looks good, but its body is made of Adler. How does this compare to Mahogany? Is it a tighter or looser sounding wood.

I've got a '67 epiphone v, and it's currently my main guitar. I find it stays in tune like a dream (just as long as you lubricate the nut and the saddles at the points of string contact). The neck is gorgeous, not 5-star perfect but *very* playable and you can take the action pretty low before it starts to fuzz out. As for the sound, it sounds lovely, leaning towards tight/punchy.

It's remarkably versatile. While it exhudes rock, it can do just about anything else. Naturally, Gibsons will be better, for sure, but don't miss out on an awesome Epi at a fraction of the price.

That's the problem with buying guitars on ebay and such, you never know exactly what you're getting. Could go either way!

Consider a Dean 79 reissue V. Good quality, set neck, mahogany, decent stock pickups, Grover tuners, binding, maple top (for burst colors) all for less than $500 brand spankin' new. Add a hard case and you're just about exactly $500.

    SPAM ALERT

I've got a great Faded V up for sale...been over in the classifieds for awhile now, but I guess not many people like Vs  About the same $ as a new Epi would run ya and def a heckuva lot better piece of wood than you'll find in an Epi.

No tuning "issues" with mine..G string slips once in awhile like most gibsons with that kind of break angle, but some minor nut work would cure that.

    END SPAM ALERT

I bought my son a '67-style Epi V for Christmas last year. It's a great guitar for the price. Plays really well, neck feels good, frets are neat. Stock pickups are fine and it stays in tune well. Sounds great through a steamin' Marshall! I'd be quite happy to gig with it. Only two criticisms:

    1) It's a little neck heavy, which I understand from JeffB may be to do with the choice of neck vs. body woods on the Epis. (Plus I'm used to playing LPs, so everything else feels neck heavy to me). Nothing a wide leather strap can't remedy.

    2) The jack socket as supplied was useless. It didn't fit the plug well and would continually crackle and cut out. I replaced it with a DiMarzio socket and now it's fine. The switch was a bit temperamental too, but I cleaned and realigned the contacts while I was changing the socket and now it's fine.

Great value for money IMO. If he ever decides he doesn't want it I'm gonna buy it for myself.

Also check out the ESP LTD Michael Amott V, it's got 22 frets, 24.75" scale, a nice sculpted joint on the back and a 59/JB set!

Seriously, it owns...this is a custom shop ESP one, but it's the same as the LTD just not having any machines touch it...
