Default Kahler Spyder adjustment on HM Strats..

    Hello all,
Will the Spyder adjust to pull back on the HM Strat? It seems like no matter how high I raise it it's "blocked" off. I dig the trem and the guitar and everything. I just want it to go crazily back and forth like a Floyd. Anyone have any tips, pictues or links I could look at for reference?

    thanks

I have not seen that trem in person since the 80's myself..... But a basic question i must ask is if someone glued a little piece of wood for the trem block to sit against... Take the trem cover off the back and see if someone has blocked it with a piece of wood....

Sorry if you already know to look for this, but first thing first is you should check the back and see if it is blocked so it is not floating

Raise/Lower the bridge until the bottom of the bridge is roughly flush with the top of your guitar, and adjust the spring claw underneath until the bottom of the bridge is parallel to the top of the guitar.
If you can't play good, play loud.

I can pull back ~ and I do... but the Spyder is not designed to be able to work like a full routed floyd rose bridge. Its more like a strat bridge thats floating.

Ahhhhhhh...now I see. Thanks for the info. Here's one I saw for sale. Does this look like the correct positioning?

    thanks

I don't know if you can see it that well, but there's how I keep mine set. I think I can get around two full steps of up bend, and a full dive bomb of course..

Not without scrounging through the back room of some guitar shop owned by a pack rat.

Though I'm hoping that now that Kahler is back into making bridges there'll be some new parts available.....and that they fit the old 80s stock.

Hey SD...is that action close? What's the trick to getting that close action with the trem being so high?

I'm not using a shim, and my action is super-close. It rocks.

Bump. Anyone else have an HM Strat that's able to pull back on the Spyder?

Not for any of the Floyd style bridges, as the lawsuit that resulted from their production is the primary reason Kahler went belly up in the first place. Gary and Tony may have some NOS parts left over, but new production is 100% Flat mounts from what I can gather

I've got a 1989 that I listed here for sale, but I changed my mind and I'm keeping it. Currently, I'm using three springs in my Spyder trem on my 1989 HM. So that I can provide good information and understand your question - are you trying to raise it so the spyder is not floating at all or are you trying to set it up so that you can use the whammy bar to bend notes up?

If it helps, I can provide some photos of how mine is setup. I haven't looked recently, but I think if I pulled the spring cover off the back, there is one spring on each of the outermost hookups/clips, and one going across the center at a slight angle. I'll post some photos of the setup later today.

Setting up the Spyder can be kind of a pain in the arse, and I never did like that you've only really got two big posts to move the whole bridge up or down (as opposed to invidual string height on a standard strat or tele). I've had my HM so long now that I don't think I could live without it. I'm very accustomed to how it plays now.

As far as replacement Spyder parts, I think I have a few. I'll look and see what I've got. Did you need bridge lock blocks? Fine tuners?

Also, you can check ebay periodically - there have been a few listings for just the spyder tremolo, various spyder parts and such. That way you don't end up buying a whole guitar only to then strip it for parts.

Hey thanks! Yes I want the Spyder to be able to pull notes up and still keep the action tight. Techs are telling me it cant float but I have pics from Screamin' Daisy that proves otherwise. I'd like some pics of the back claw of one that is floating so these guys can get it right. Does your neck have a shim in it?

    thanks again

Aside from the electronics I changed out on my HM to a set of EMG's, the other hardware and such on the guitar is original and I'm pretty sure there aren't any neck shims. I'll get some photos of the different views of the bridge from close up and also the trem springs and the claw setup in the back of it.

Here's a for sale link i posted with some photos before I changed mind last sunday and decided to keep it.
