A friend of mine tolded me they sounded weak, or wimpy. But I really like the sound.. except I find the III model is a bit excessive.. 3 pickups is more than you ever need.. Plus.. more routing, less sustain.

I don't like the three pickup model as much either. Which is kind of ironic, because the firebirdVII is the three pickup model, a 3 has a wammy bar and a 5 has just the two pickups. I like the firebirdV (don't ask about the name, it wasn't accidental, I knew what I was doing... Unfortunately).

I've never heard one or played one.

I remember someone once said they were "stiff" feeling.

Anyways. I liked it better before Gibson flipped the design around, and took off all the cool doodads, and made it out of mahogany and neckthrough... back when it was called the Jazzmaster

It's easiest thinking about it in terms of Gibson's line.

    FB-I LP/SG Jr.
    FB-III LP/SG Special
    FB-V LP/SG Standard
    FB-VII LP/SG Custom

The I and III have dot fret markers (and the III has binding), the V has trapezoid inlays, the VII has blocks.

Also, the III and V have tremolo's. A tailpiece/bridge one on the III and a lyre(or whatever) on the V's.

But those are secondary characteristics. In other words, if you remove the vibrato, it doesn't change what the guitar is. In the original scheme of things, you could NOT have a FB-III and have trapezoid inlays.

I really like them-They're unique-stylish for any venue. I feel that I should mention that Sonny Landreth uses one as well and sounds phenomenal.

the first time i played a bird sitting down, it was awkward, but after owning an explorer for 3 years, ive become used to the feel of a firebird. but yes, standing up for playing them is much better, definitly my favourite rythmn electric guitar, ive done lead work on them but nothing is mroe satisfying to me then bashing out huge open chords on those babies. pissed off strat...perfect example

I have wanted one for years. The last real band I was in the drummer played guitar for himself from time to time and he actually had a very nice Bird...it was a plain/simple one...2 pickups and nickle, sunburst...but it was a great axe. He let me borrow it from months at a time which made the GAS go away for months at a time but a few years ago he asked for it back so I got full time BirdGAS again!

Everyone must own one, simply must.

My having a baritone, flying V and 7-string kind-of make up for it.
