EMG HZ's are passive pickups that try to sound similar to active emgs' without the active and without the advantages that passives normally have which means in alot of cases your better off just using active emgs, but either way seymour duncan and dimarzio make way better passive pickups.

The HZ-4 sounds like a nasal version of the JB. I'd swap it out for a JB in the bridge.

Exactly. Either you like them, or you don't.

I knew NOTHING about pickups when I bought LesStrat. But I knew that I didn't like the tone of the stock pups. I had a vague idea of what I was looking for, and my buddy Scott (see sig) was working at the music store at the time. I followed his recs, and after a misstep with the duckbucker, ended up with the HR/CR/HR config in it now.

I actually liked the EMG-HZs I tried a long time ago. A lot fo people think they are too much of a one-trick-pony, but I think they interact well with the guitar's knobs. It is true that they have a distinct sound, but I happened to like that sound, and I think they are more versatile for what people give them credit for. If you just like heavy rock styles, keep in mind that this same model of pickup is what Alexi from CoB uses in his signature ESP guitars, even the expensive Japanese version.
