Default My first hybrid!!! With hum :( Any solution to a coil mismatch hum?

Hey y'all! Hello from the Internet cafe!

I had my Duncan Distortion wax potted because it squealed like a pig and when I got it back, the screw coil had shorted. I took it apart and the wires were just disconected, there was nothing I could do. I also had an old coil from a Jackson J50BC pickup I had in my first guitar so I decided I'd try to do a hybrid. However the Distortion coils is very hot and the Jackson coil pretty quiet. There is a 4K impedance mismatch.
So I did the operation and it was easier than I thought. The pickup sounds like butt and is pretty thin sounding but eh, beggars can't be chosers. But I can barely use it. Under high ish gain, there is a lot of noise. Is this due for sure to the coil mismatch?
My wiring is correct and this pickup is in phase with the other which leads me to believe that the magnet is correctly placed.

Is there any way to get rid of this, or would I just need a hotter coil to match the SH6's better?

You mixed coils from different brands... it is likely that the Jackson coil may be wound opposite of the Duncan coil... that would cause it to hum as much as a single coil. What you made is similar to a 59/Distortion... not what I would recommend as a good mixture... the Distortion/JB coils mix best with a Custom's coil...

So I should just swap out the wires from the Jackson coils then?
And I know it's not a good mixture but I had no choice. No Internet, no parts, no money and no spare bucker to put in
I don't have enough on my paypal to get a spare coil.

Anyway to know ahead of time if the coil was wound opposite of the Duncan?

I figured that if the screw coil of two different buckers attracted the same side (north in my case) of a magnet, the coils wouldn't be opposite and the hybrid would turn out okay.

Am I off base on this one? Gonna be making a hybrid from different brands and was wondering about this.

YES! If you're getting a really thin sound from the pickup then you have to reverse the phase of one of the coils. BUT when you do that, you may find that your new pickup is now out of phase with the other, so you'd have to reverse the hot and ground.

Doesn't matter which direction it was "wound". Only matters which direction the current is flowing relative to the other coil. You should join the coils together either start lead to start lead or finish lead to finish lead -- never start to finish or you'll have hum and phasing problems.

The mismatch of 4k is a bit misleading because the hotter coil is using #43 wire (possible #44) instead of the #42 wire in the 4k coil, which will give you higher DCR reading for the same number of turns. If the hot coil is 7k, it translates to roughly to 5k worth of #42 wire so the mismatch isn't as great as it sounds. So you should get a LITTLE bit of hum from it when wired up correctly but nohwere near enough to make it unplayable, and certainly nowhere near as much as a single coil.
In 1861 as the Confederate forces were about to fire on Fort Sumter, the blue and gray had infinitely more in common than the blue and red today. What fellowship can "the truth shall set you free" ever have with "there is no truth, only points of view", or "what is truth?"

Secession would be a horror. But barring a major national crisis like a Black Death magnitude epidemic or nuclear attack to erase once and for all the myth that truth is negotiable, it is coming.

I just swapped out the wires and it sounds alright now. Thanks!
