but if it's a type of poly, it could be thick and not come off even after hours with steel wool.

This question makes me want to say "are you serious?" But what do you mean by "unlacquered"? Do you mean raw, oiled, etc?

Anyway the straight and honest answer was already given by Beandip: Sandpaper.

Use sand paper to get most of it off, then finish the job with the super fine steel wool.
Buy the book in my avatar. It's pretty cool.

Hey Poorman, you are wrong buddy. Answer : 0000 Steel Wool - Gently - Then you will need to seal the raw wood with TRU-OIL. Lightly wipe on 3 - 4 coats. Let each coat dry before applying subsequent coat. Let dry overnite, then take your 0000 Steel Wool, and " kiss " off any detritus that may have occured during your initial rub-in. Go easy. It will be killer. TRU-OIL GUNSTOCK FINISH NO WAX !

see, but that's still a finish. Alot of folks like a raw wood neck (myself included). I dont want oil or any other sealent/protectant between me and the wood. And like I said before, steel wool will take a LONG time to pull it off if it's a thick poly finish.

Or, of course, there is the natural method. Play it non-stop like a mother day in and day out....My LP is actually an unfinished neck for the past 8-10 years....

Thankyou so much for your help! A Friend of mine has a Peavey Wolfgang and I love the Feel of that neck so I thought maybe I can achieve a similar effect by removing the lacquer on my guitar necks.
