    Default gretschs?

    hey
i've been really interested in the gretschs lately.
I've been to the site and theres just SO many i dunno where to start?
What are the main catergories and what makes them unique/different to the others. Obviously theres the duo jet solid bodies and the hollow bodies. But in the group of hollowbodies, what are the differences between say white falcons and country's and all the other ones out there.

I love 'em. Filtertrons are great pickups with alot of twang, but they sound good with distortion also. Duo Jets are semi-hollow bodies and are very light. I can get several different sounds from mine using the tone switch and pickup selector. I even like the tone switch set on the bass setting (some say mud setting) with the treble pickup on running through a cranked TS9.

Tennessee Roses are jazz boxes with a bigsby. Very mellow on all pickup selections. They don't have the tone switch like the Duo Jets, but have tone pots.

I can't tell you about the rest because I haven't tried them.

Since Fender has taken over Gretsch, their quality has really improved and you can find some real good deals on them. Also, the stock filtertrons are very good and I don't feel the need to replace them.

DuoJets actually aren't solid body. They're chambered.

The difference between the 16" 6120 hollowbody guitars and the 17" Falcons & Country Clubs is generally the 6120s are a little more raucous and wilder sounding while the 17" Falcons and Clubs are slightly mellower and a little darker in sound. A Club is essentially a Falcon without the glitz. although there are some other differences such as ebony board on the Falcon, rosewood on the Club and most of the tops on the Gretsches are laminated maple. However, there is one Club model that has a laminated spruce top. Then there's the differences in the filtertrons and the single coil Dynas. Some guys swear by the twang of the Dynas. Others prefer filters. The HiLo trons though usually get the least respect of the three, though.

Also, some of the 6120s body thicknesses are different, mostly with 2.5" depth, but at least one has a 2.75" and another has a 2.0" I think. Anniversaries are essentially a lesser expensive 6120 without bound F holes and such.

A Gretsch White Falcon has long been a dream guitar of mine. I love hollowbodies (or semis), and Gretschs have such a cool tone. Great guitars.

You likey Falcons? Here's mine. I've got a lot of guitars and I feel like more of a badass behind one of my Falcons than any other guitar I own. Certainly not everybodies cup o tea, but it works for me.

71 Gretsch Country Gentleman. Even though Baldwin had already bought out Gretsch, they had not changed the specs yet, so mine is the same as the late 60s models. It's serial # 11110. They started changing the specs not too long after mine with different tuners, opened up the F holes, the mute disappeared, removed the backpad, changed the pickguard shape, etc. There's a better picture of it here.

I've got some Fenders, Gibsons, a Rick, some DeArmonds, Epis, a Jackson, Peaveys, homemade, and some others. I did a group shot a couple of years ago and I'm getting ready to do another tomorrow morning, if it works out. If I get it done, I'll post it.

Speaking of Gretschs, has anyone checked the new G5135 Electromatic Corvette and/or the new MegaTron pickups? I'm not much into the hollowbodies, but this new Gretsch is giving me GAS.

I was wondering about the magna'trons myself. Apparently they're designed like the dyna sonics with the magnet being the pole piece. Like a traditional tele pickup.

What else is different about them? I don't have a clue.

I did just order a power'tron plus for the bridge of my gibby though.

turns out it's "mega-tron", not made by tv jones. which sucks. the magna-trons are supposed to be like a dearmond-type pickup only with a hint of single coily-ness. so pretty much what you described.

i tried the power tron plus in a billy-bo jupiter (which i was afraid to touch) that was chambered mahagony, mahagony neck, with a rosewood fretboard. needless to say it was the best sounding/playing guitar i've EVER played. i loved it. those powertrons rocked my world. i wish it had 2 tones (which could be changed, i don't need the master volume) and a WAY lower pricce 2100 for a guitar. but i guess that's what you pay for an almost perfect guitar that looks absolutely awesome. it was definatly worth it, i just don't feel like saving that much.

the exuctive summary is that the powertrons rocked my socks off. you should love them like a child. are you talking about the DC? i think that i would actually like the DC faded with a power tron plus in the bridge and a magna tron in the neck. i think it would sound awesome. i just didn't like it with the p-90's for some reason.

I'm keeping the P-90 in the neck.

The way I see it is, I'll have every tone imaginable once I get the filtron in my gibby. Keeping the P-90 in the neck means I'll still have a P-90 tone in my pocket.

Plus it will sound HEAVENLY when blended.

smart choice. that's probably what i'd do. i just didn't like the bridge p-90, come to think of it.
