    Default Broken Coils?

    Hi!
I am building a nice collection of broken pickups! I now have a JB , a Jazz and a pat # Gibson that all work only in split mode. When i try to do full humbucking ....nothing! Is this hard to fix?
My idea was to maybe use these and make hybrids. Problem is , because they all work only in single coil, does that mean only the stud coils are good? Can i do a double stud pickup?
Or could it be either coil that's out?
I think i did this while putting on / removing nickle covers... cant stop putzing with this stuff!
Anyway, I'd love to fix or make hybrids out of them.
    Thx!

First of all you have to check whether its the hookup wire or the coil. Remove the cothtape and get the connection between the hookup wire and the coil lead. Open the small paper tape around the connection and check the ohmreading between the coil lead and the front end of the hookup wire. If this is okay, the you got a big chance that the coil is dead.

He's right. It depends on the nature of the problem. If the coil itself has been punctured, it's rewind time.
In 1861 as the Confederate forces were about to fire on Fort Sumter, the blue and gray had infinitely more in common than the blue and red today. What fellowship can "the truth shall set you free" ever have with "there is no truth, only points of view", or "what is truth?"

Secession would be a horror. But barring a major national crisis like a Black Death magnitude epidemic or nuclear attack to erase once and for all the myth that truth is negotiable, it is coming.

I got 2 dead JB's and the stud coil was still good on both, so now I have a JB with 2 stud coils. I used the magnet the stuck to the refrigerator the best. I think??? the studs should sound similiar to Hex screws, but not sure.

Although if you damaged them by taking on/off covers, likely a solder burr or something scraped the outside of the coil. Sometimes you get lucky and you can restore a coil like that just by peeling off a few winds until you get past the problem area. Especially if the wind you cut through was one of those stray wraps that falls outside the tape sometimes, or is loose under the tape so it easily breaks. Another possibility is that you tugged the soldered leads exiting the pickup. If you broke the exit lead from it's coil wire, that's also an easy fix for someone experienced in pickup repair, beacuse you just peel one or two wraps out, and re-solder the exit wire.

Somewhere around here there's a tutorial for converting a slug coil into a screw coil, where you cut and glue a little piece of plastic tubing inside the slug hole, to downsize it so it accepts the threads. So if your screw coils are both truly dead, you can still have a screw/slug hybrid.
