    Talking John Mayer's chops

I'm in San Diego with my hotel room windows open sitting here listening to the Sheryl Crow and John Mayer concert John's got some amazing blues chops that he's just pounding upside all those SD fans' heads. Wow. What a break that my hotel is right next to the venue. I just saved the $55 they were asking for the tickets. Sound quality is way below average, but I can listen and still post on the forum.

I mean, how many of you have ever listened to a major artist live and typed on the forum at the same time?

    You mean stalking?

I like John Mayer's playing. Excellent player. But... I can't stand his VOICE! It's annoying. I'd listen to him more if he'd shut up. Sounds kinda funny, doesn't it?

+1000000000000 His voice is like nails on a chalkboard for me. It's matured a bit, but not enough for me to go and buy an album. Good player though.....

Why is it such an allegedly talented guitarist writes such horrible songs for radio play?

That.. pretty much sums up why I dont like him. If he would shut up, get a good blues singer, and just play guitar, and quit with the 'look at me im a blues god' antics on stage, I'd have so much more respect for him.

And more $$$$$$$$$ means more Dumbles.

He has a pic of his studio rig in the booklet with the new CD: three Dumbles and a pair of Two Rocks (so that's four rocks altogether.) Sheesh.

He's just a new face for 30/40 somethings to buy honky atonal music from. You know the type that get the Columbia House Music catalogs and figure they have to be hip and buy what they're hearing on the way to work between traffic reports. The same people who keep Cheryl Crow and Dave Mathews in business.

I'm glad you got to hear the concert, Scott. You must lead a charmed life ... stay in a different hotel than your "regular" one, and score free tickets.

Is it just me, or does her voice get shrill on the high notes?

I saw her open for Crowded House before she got really big. I think she's a good looking woman, but at the time she acted like a stoner chick on stage, and it seemed a little ... phony. she has a couple of decent tunes, though.

John Mayer no doubt has talent ... I think the challenge for him is to decide who he really wants to be, and find an artistic direction.

I find Sheryl Crow extremely annoying.

Many of John Mayer's songs are annoying.

OTOH, I saw a concert on DTV that had some really cool tunes, and John really CAN play.

I think many people under estimate him. Whether you want to believe it or not, he's the Eric Clapton of this generation. I don't discount him, I take him seriously as a viable artist. At first, I thought he was a flavor of the month, but after seeing what he's done from Trio till now, it's obvious he's here to stay.
Even Clapton started out doing 60's pop. I like his music. Not all, but I like what he stands for as a player and songwriter.

Well said. I agree. I don't know if I would elevate quite so high as Clapton status, but I repect him, most of his tunes, and his playing ability.

Give him time. Who knew how big Clapton would get just a few years into his career? I’m not saying Mayer will or will not reach that kind of status, but I do think the potential is there.

Musically I have a tough time getting into his earlier poppy stuff, but admittedly have only heard singles on the radio. I do own the Trio! CD, and thoroughly enjoy listening to it. While I’m not thrilled about his first single from Continuum, I have entertained buying it.

I would debate the Clapton comparisons on a couple of points.

Clapton was in a BAND when he "started out doing 60s pop" -- actually, the yardbirds were doing a lot of blues at the time, but he quit on principle over the band's direction after "For Your Love" was released.

Clapton said he had a "missionary zeal" for the blues at the time, and wasn't really pleasant about it either. Remember that at the time, blues was not all that popular or commercial, and some of those groups were charting their own course, eventually reintroducing the blues to the States.

no doubt that Clapton views Mayer as a fine player though
