Default MY Project Guitar - I think I'm done!

Over the past several weeks, I've been working on a Washburn Idol WI62. Specifically, wanted to get it to be a great slide/blues guitar. Last night I finally worked out the last pickup problem ... the AP2(n) was still bassy and a little weak. The solution was raising the pickup quite a bit and driving the pole screws deep into the pickup for the E-A-D strings. Now it balances with the 498T which has been great for about a week.

I still have a "sunk cost" pickup to order ... returning a 2nd AP2(n) that was sent to me in error. I think I'm going to order the Pearly Gates Bridge or a Phat Cat neck to play with ... maybe a Jazz neck.

If you are interested in how it sounds, I'll be putting some new material up over the next few weeks on my soundclick site with this guitar. I have one clip (see link in my signature below) that shows how it sounded about a week ago with the AP2(n)/498T(b) that's a reasonable representation ... just much better after tweaking. Thanks for the help ... I know you guys are probably tired of seeing posts on this axe. But I think it's a beautiful alternative to an SG style guitar. I have a Gibson SG Standard with 57/57+ in the next room ... so I know ... I bought it for my son last year. Apologize for the pix ... new at both internet pix and soundclips.

A little Derek Trucks influence? I know he used an Idol for the DTB stuff.

Nice guitar btw! I might get back into slide..... Way to start some gas!

Thanks ... I'm pleased. By the way, the first minute of the clip is the AP2(n) before I fixed it. The rest of the clip is either the 498T(b) or a mix of the two ... for which I was always satisfied. The AP2(n) only is better now after I kept working on it ... but the improvement is not in this clip ... the rest of the clip respresents the guitar well.

Yeah, I'm a big Derek Trucks fan ... my son's hero for sure too. He's got a Gibson SG Standard set in open tuning. But Duane Allman, Warren Haynes, Eric Clapton and many others have an influence on me. Of course, I don't sound like any of them ... I just hope there are hints in there.

Derek does play an upscale version of this quitar occasionally ... WI68 ... now that's a guitar. I think it comes stock with '59 and Custom Custom. I did get the case it comes in for a steal.

My guitar is still sounding pretty good to me with the A2P(n)/498T(b) pickups.

I returned my "sunk cost" A2P(n) pickup a few weeks ago. It was lost and post office finally found it. I decided to get a '59 Bridge just for kicks. I really like mixing the "woody" A2 with the tighter A5 but the 498T is much stronger at 14.4k.

Anybody had any experience with A2P(n)/59(b) in an "SG like" guitar.
What might I expect from this vintage power A5 mixed with the A2 neck? Again my clips are in the above post with the A2P(n)/498T(b).

That is some really nice slide playing! What guage strings are you using, slide, tuning, etc?

    Thanks.

Standard tuning, 10-46 D'Addarios, fairly thick off the rack glass slide ... I can't remember the name but they are real common. I used to have two old glass Corcidin bottles but I managed to break those over the years. My son brought in a reissue Corcidin slide the other day ... was nothing like the ones I had ... these new ones were thinner.

I occasionally do an open E tuning on the acoustic ... but I am not very good at it. One reason I bought this guitar is to practice some open E slide songs and leave it tuned to open E ... some Derek Trucks things. I have only experimented with it ... but the Washburn has some nice sounds in open tuning.

The Yamaha semi-hollow has been my main guitar over the past 26 years and has a different sound. If interested I've got some ZZ Top, Gov't Mule, Layla, Robert Johnson (acoustic) and a couple of other slide sounds at http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page...?bandid=599073

I have one of those new Bottle Slides. I don't like it at all. There is a seam on it, my mud slide sounds better, but its just so big that I can't use it. The slide search continues.

And all of this time I've been staring at your avatar and thinking you had an sg.. (it looks like it from a distance).

It's even better looking up close.

I looked it up ... I use a Dunlop Pyrex slide with the thick walls ... pretty common. I really liked the old Corcidin bottles I used to have ... but the new ones I've seen are fairly light weigth. I've gotten used to the Dunlop and it apprears I'm unable to break it.

The SG look and feel is what got my attention in the first place. My son has an SG Standard and the one thing I don't like about it is how the pickups line up with the pickguard ... not the strings. The reissues are different ... I liked the way this one looked and it seemed to fit the bill. I think it is as good a guitar for about 1/3 the money. My son has put 57/57+ in the SG and likes it a lot ... great guitar. We're both happy.
