Default Finally got my backordered Dyna Comp today....

So i get this thing from UPS today, with the free MXR t-shirt and all. I install the battery, plug it up, and flip it on & play and i really didn't notice any notable difference in my sound. Is there anything i'm missing here? Do i set the controls to any certain levels to get certain sounds? Aside from a slight "smoothing" of my tone, this thing really isn't doing anything to my sound. Hmmm....

Anyone have any tips/comments on these things?

Compressors are supposed to even out string volume and attack, increase sustain, etc. However, your experience has always been my experience with compressors. Maybe I'm missing something too.

Did your sustain increase? I set mine at about 2:00 on both knobs. That gives me a slight signal boost, and the amount of sustain I want. It should NOT dramatically change your tone, but it SHOULD even out your volume across strings.

You should notice a slight change in your tone, but it is not supposed to dramatically change it.

You will notice it on recordings more than a live setting I think. It will be easier to get a consistent sounding rhythm part for example. You should also notice that when you pick the string either hard or soft that the volume of each will be closer together.

Often compressors will take away the dynamics of when you first hit the strings.
If you can HEAR a compressor working- you have it set wrong. An effect that should be used sparingly. Personally, I don't care for then on guitar, with the exception of Rickenbaker guitars (they NEED them) you should be able to get all the sustain you need with your amp.

Most compressors do not take any dynamics away from the guitar!!
The bandwith is simply too narrow!!!
Play rhythm with it, prefely some funky stuff, turn it on and off....then it should show some indication on what it does
    Not gonna miss you know!
    Information is not knowledge.

compression's one of those effects where you notice it when you turn it off

to get a feel for it, i'd stick a really nasty OD/DS pedal in front of it and just tweak the settings a bit.. dyna comps are subtle but can sound lovely!

I'll have to disagree with ya on this one, every comp I've tried took away the initial punch when I've struck the strings, that's one of the things compressors are desgined to do to some degree, and that's why the MXR unit is called "DYNA" comp= I really don't care for the dyna-comp myself. come to think of it, I don't care for any compressors for guitar. On PA systems vocals and kick drums, they work great IMO.
