From what I managed to find it's a kind of pine... that mustn't be very good but some seem to like it...

How does it compare to other woods?
Whats similar to it?
How does it compare to alder, ash or even poplar?

I don't know about tone, but from working with wood for years, I'd say it's closer to poplar than anything. You'd be surprised how many people can't discern the differences between regular pine and poplar. When I was doing carpentry, all the pallettes of material we got were all made of hardwoods, hickory 4x4's and poplar 2x4's, with a couple pine 2x4's. When I was asking the guys I work with to help me tear the pallettes down, and to save me the poplar for firewood and toss the pine, half of the poplar wound up in the pile of pine!
