I have a set in my Les Paul Standard. They're great. Low output pickups thru a high gain amp are wicked. You can turn the gain up so much more and still have the clarity. They have the smoothness of the Alnico II magnet, yet with bite and cut. I would best describe them as smooth and raunchy. I play everything from Godsmack/Disturbed to Zeppelin/Doors with them. They do it all. You'll love 'em!


can't wait. btw are they low output or meduim?
I have a Pearly gates neck in the bridge of my kramer baretta and it's quickly becomming my favorite pickup ever.

Is it best to set them close or low?? I cant decide if I like mine in my carvin neck..sounds good but then has these trebly overtones...I want to love it.



The PG set in my strat is one of two sets (the other being the Custom/Jazz in my LP) that will never be removed. It's a great feeling when you find a set of pickups that end your tone search for a specific guitar. The tone quest is over, let the music commence.

Weak? No. It's lower output, what basically equates to it having a far more open and less compressed tone than real high output pickups. I think you'll find that the PG sizzles in all the right places.

I have a set in my '96 LP Standard and I agree totally with your description. They have the smoothness and softer bass you would expect from an a2 pickup, but they have an extended top end that gives them more bite and makes them sound more 'open' than other a2 pups I've tried. They sound great clean or dirty and I haven't found a style they can't cover.
With vintage-style buckers I usually get the bridge pup as close as I can without it catching the strings when I play hard, then adjust the neck pup so they balance. The neck pup is generally lower. The trebly overtones are part of the PG experience - that, combined with the softer bass, is what makes the PG such a great neck pup in a Les Paul.
This all depends on your definition of weak! Being modelled on the pups in Billy Gibbons' '59 LP, PGs are PAF-style and have the output of a vintage Gibson humbucker. When I think vintage Gibson humbucker I think Led Zeppelin, Free, Allman Brothers, classic John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Angus Young........ Billy Gibbons..... That's not weak IMO! They sound great with higher gain too, provided you have the amp and/or pedals to get you there.

Ok SimonF I love all that stuff so if its weak kick some sand in my face...

I had the PGn in an ash Strat. I wasn't crazy about it at first, but that was partially b/c I was pairing it with a JB. When the amp was eq'd for the JB the PG had too much of the 'treble overtone' you guys are talking about...I don't like to hear that much pick. Pairing the JB with the Jazz was a great improvement for my heavy distortion sound.
However, when I paired the PGn with a C5 in the bridge, the pickup was great. It has a very open tone that really brought the tone of the Strat out. Truly the axe could do from country clean to hard rock/metal easily. I'd call the PGn kind of 'silky', just really smooth but also with some cut. Overall it's a great pickup. Someday I'd really like to try a PG neck and bridge combo as well. I'd be willing to bet the PGn would be a great bridge pickup to use with singles in the neck and middle.

Pearly Gates in the neck is just simply a beautiful sound, i play alot of punk rock which means im mostly a distorted bridge guy, but if i play a bit of clean ska, or just want to mellow it out, the pearly gates clean in the neck is where its at. Its just so warm and mellow, yet retains a great clarity. With a bit of distortion its nice too, but i think to really understand how great this pickup is you need it either clean or very mildly overdriven.
I would be very surprised to find someone who doesn't like this pickup, granted its not neccesarily suitable for everyone, but i'm sure almost everyone can appreciate its tone.
I have mine at 3/16" while fretting the last fret on both the low E and high E strings. For both the neck & bridge. It 's what works for me. Tried them higher and lower. I'm using a Diezel Herbert and don't need to send it anymore signal than is necessary. If I were using it with a lesser gain head, I might bump it up a little. My other heads are a Rectifier and a Marshall DSL which have plenty of gain, and it works fine there also.
I can't wait to get my bridge model in a few hours but the neck model I had in the bridge was great.
Remember, if you've got a kick ass high gain amp, you want your guitar signal to be as clean as possible. When that happens you get the most wonderful tones you can imagine. Oh, and don't worry about output, I was using the neck model *7.3k* to play metallica and had no problem doing crazy pinch harmonics.
It also is far more resistant to feedback than my JB was... I'm so ****ing giddy to get my PGb now....

Here's some in a Les Paul and they rock in one. The clean is neck and bridge...neck distorted comes in...bridge comes in on lead and rhythm.
