Default should C5 clip when played clean?

    Hey All

I put a C5 in the bridge of my maton electric a few weeks ago . I've been continually adjusting the height ever since . I just cant seem to get it perfect . Its already an improvment over the stock one but I just cant find the perfect balance.
The SD sheet recommends 1/16th inch from the strings when depressed but its real dirty that close . I have it backed about 1/8th to 1/4 away and its still clips if I dig in .
Is this the nature of this hotter pick up ,or does this sound wrong ?

    Thanks

The pickup will enhance breakup, but the amount of headroom is to a great extent due to the amp and its' settings. How well does the amp clean up generally? What gain settings are you using?

It depends on the headroom of the amp, but in general, something as hot as 14.4K will push the amp a bit. At least the C5 has a nice tone, so it's not exaggerating any frequency too much. If it's too much for your amp and finger attack, go back down to a 59B. It's a very similar tone with less output.

Any highout pickups will drive your amp... they are mant to push the amp....A lot would depend on your amp's headroom & settings for clean tones.. You could also turn down the volume on your guitar to clean up.. I do that with my JB ( turn the volume down on the guitar) and it works well.. I do expect better clarity with a C5 after turning the vol pot.

If your guitar has 500k pots for that pup, try turning the volume down.

When you say "clip" do you mean all frequencies or just treble?

Also, how do you have the pole pieces adjusted? Flush with the bobbin/cover or in a curve to match the radius of the bridge? You may be able to raise the middle pole pieces a bit, lower the pup a tad more and voila!

    Hope this helps,
