    Default MBox help for PC

    Hey Forum People,
Long time no talk. Hope everyone is well. I'm trying to install Pro Tools (LE) MBox on my new HP PC (it's the 1610 with the AMD Dual Core processor). I used the correct CD-ROM, which states it's compatible with Windows XP. The installation procedure goes fine, except I get this warning midway through that says the device hasn't passed Microsoft's "Logo Verification" or something. Since I used Pro Tools on my last PC I went ahead with the installation. Then My PC wouldn't boot up when I tried to restart--it just went through this endless startup loop and I finally had to crash it, do a safe start and then remove Pro Tools.
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I just want to do some recording! Any advice would be most appreciated!

Hey Matt, have you checked out the Digidesign User Conference http://duc.digidesign.com Lots of dudes who know a lot. Pro Tools is picky about what computers it wants to run on so I would definately check over there or call Digi. There also might be a quick patch to download.

ProTools is VERY picky when it comes to PC hardware. Your PC may not be compatible. Check the digidesign website and read their compatibility notes.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I did go to Digi and the news was not good. Although the MBox does work with Windows XP, all XP systems are not created equal. Here's what i found:
Not Supported with any version of Pro Tools:

    * Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
    * Windows XP Media Center Edition

D'oh! I have the damn media center edition.

    So here's a new question:
Can you use the MBox as the input source for other programs like Cubase?

Yes, but you would still have to install the ASIO drivers for the MBox (should be on the same CD). The question, though, becomes why would you? The whole appeal of the MBox is that it works with ProTools - take that away and you're left with a fairly run-of-the-mill outboard audio interface.

If you bought the MBox new, I recommend exchanging it for something cheaper that would be more suitable, like one of M-Audio's products.

I got the MBox some time ago, so I can't exchange it. The reason I want to keep using it as my input source is because of the Focusrite mic preamps inside it. I love the sound of those things. That's the only thing that really elevates it above run of the mill.

Ok, then you should install those ASIO drivers. Be aware that the performance of said drivers is pretty sluggish in quite a few programs (I don't know if Cubase is one of them), so you may find it an unworkable solution.

Worst case scenario, you can keep it until you get a compatible computer.
