    Question PATB Question

    Hey guys (and gals?)

Long time reader first time poster. I have a PATB that I bought a loooooooong time ago (I assume PATB-1), when they first came out. Its the funny square shape with the funky posts. I had it in a Jackson Dinky (alder/maple-rosewood neck) and it was just too bright...i.e., ice picky. I replaced it with a SD Distortion, and I'm much happier.

My question is...the little sticker on the back of my PATB says "JBJ" plain and clear. I thought the PATB was its own design. Is it really a JB in different packaging?

    TIA

Sounds like it's a JB trembucker, not a PATB.

Does your pickup look like this?

Yeah, the sticker should read, 1B, 2B or 3B, with 1 being the Original, 2 being Distortion and 3 being Blues TB. My guess is that someone took the sticker off another pickup somewhere along the line and applied it to the baseplate, before you bought it.

Probably the only way to tell which one it is, will be to measure the resistance with a multi meter. It will be pretty obvious which one it is then, you can compare the reading to the tone chart.

I think the chance is almost Zero that it's a JBJ, unless someone sent in a PATB to have it re-wound. That is the only thing I can think of other than a mis applied sticker.

I bought it new, so I agree its probably remote that its been rewound. I'm thinking like you, a mis-applied sticker. I'm gonna try it in my mahoganu neck-thru. Trying to figure what singles to put in to match the PATB in a H/S/S set-up.

    Thanks everyone.

Here is my take on it. It is no questions about it one of the early one without a logo. I have read here the PATB-1 was modelled after a JB or something along those lines. Maybe this was before they had the PATB-1 designation? Maybe a mixup from the stickers? If it was bought new like this, it's hard to say someone applied a wrong sticker on it. Either this was intended to be a JB parallel Axis from the beginning or someone from within was confused as to what sticker to apply.

As for what to match it up with, the PATB stacks are AWSOME, and will of course match the look fantastically. If you want more of a vintage tone, either the SSL-1's for a bright, glassy tone, or the APS for a warm, smooth tone. Both balance well with the PATB, so no issues there.

I also had a PATB-1 with a "JBL" Sticker about 10-15 years ago. Sounded like a PATB-1, so I always assumed it was simply mislabeled.... then at some point I noticed that the writing seemed "damaged" at the back of the J, that "J" was in fact originally a 1.
