Default Fender Humbucker Guitars / Gibson Singles?

Fender entered the market for selling HB equipped guitars a long time ago.

Why has Gibson never entered the conventional single coil market (ie excluding P90s)? I gotta wonder how an SG or Paul might sound with some crisp singles?

    EDIT:

I recall they did have a few offerings such as the Kalamazoos, but why nothing recently and AFAIK, never in an LP body

LP w/ singles? I bet they would probably sound like the Yamaha Frank Gambale model (AES FG). I've been paying a lot of attention to Frank lately. The Yamaha that bares his name looks pretty close to a double cutaway version of a Les Paul to me. It has a single neck and middle w/ an HB in the bridge.

I'm thinking strat-ish when it comes to an SG with singles. Minus the trem of course! However, the difference in body and neck woods are important considerations when putting these types of combos together.

Heres a link to the Gambale model: http://www.yamaha.com/guitars/produc...600012,00.html

FWIW, when still in High-School, i drew (very accurate may i add) an Gold Top LP w. FOUR Danelectro style LipStick PU's !

It looked funny, but every now and again, i wonder how that thing would have sounded.
To be honset, the Gold and Silver did not look too bad together.

Maybe i should confront Warmoth to use an un-routed LP body, and insted of cutting two 'bucker spacings with the CNC machine, to re-programme it for the four (FIVE, if they'll fit) LipStick PU's !

. . . now where it their phone number !

ESP Japan has a few signature models that are LP shaped with a SSS and SSH setup although most of the ones in the second gallery are basically LP shaped 'super strats'.

Would have posted pics but the pages are in flash and I'm not sure how to post pics from there.

I think there was a model of SG Melody Maker for a while that had single coils... if you look closely in the music video fro Weezer's "Undone (the sweater song)" and "Say It Ain't So" it looks like the rhythm guitarist's SG has a single coil in the neck and a hot rails in the bridge! Totally steezy guitar if true.

I have been fooling with some old Melody Maker pickups lately and they sound surprisingly good. Tried adding a baseplate between the bottom cover and the coil and that helps...kinda like a smaller version of a P90---definitely not a Fender sound; thicker, less twangy. I always liked those Epi Coronet/Olympic models with the MM pickups and the featherweight mahogany bodies...Tele killers if you set them up right.

You overlooked the infamous S-1, not exactly the high point of Gibson's reputation.

The USA 1 was a Gibson superstrat with a set neck.

I think they'd be better for gibsons, single coils. cut out a lot of the dullness of mahogany...

    Boo HBs in fenders!!!
