Red face Writer's block for 2 years

I have been writing poetry and songs since high school, for eons , but I have not written any real lyrics since my last band went kaput, 2-3 years ago. I wrote all of our songs and recorded them in demo form for the band to hear. I have written songs for most of the bands I’ve been in. I have also done it just because it always came natural. I’d wake up with lyrics and melodies in my head… I’d ride my bike and have lyrics in my head… surf, snowboard, hike… I always had lyrics in my head

Over the last couple of years, I’ve recorded 2 CDs of instrumentals and recorded gobs of clips, but no lyrics.
I tried to write some lyrics last week after having a stupid weird dream but the words just seemed pretentious after I got done… thus, the song ended up in the round file on the floor

I don’t need suggestions on ending “writer’s block”… I could do it if I had the desire, but the passion has not been there.

Maybe it’s because I am highly successful now and have no pain in my life… hehe, speaking of ‘pretentious’.

Anyone else in a pitiful situation or musical nothingness?

    I had a similar problem...

All throughout high school I kept a pad and pen with me, I was always jotting down ideas and lyrics. Nowadays, I just can't do it anymore. It typically just comes out silly and pretentious.

Granted...maybe its not that I've changed, so much as my tastes have become more...erm...discriminating. Meaning I look at my old stuff now and think "Christ, what is this ****?"

Nowadays I try to focus on vocal melody more than anything else...and finding words that fit in naturally. It makes for a bit more of an abstract lyrical style, but it works.

Though, that doesn't automatically make the song devoid of meaning. It juts makes it a bit more "interpretable".
    Peace,
    Dan

I had this, it's called "marriage". the only problem is that I couldn't write ANYTHING. music, lyrics, anything. I was completely blocked up. it was kinda like creative constipation.

i dont have a website. i can show you some things, i guess, i havent really written any lyrics in awhile. im still trying to finish old ones and i havent been reading at all lately. i forgot how to steer and even look in the right direction. so i take the previous comment back, lyrical nothingness, yes, musical, no.

That's probably more appropriate for me too. Although, I have not done much music writing since my last CD either

By the way, T.S. Elliot's "Winter" is one of my favorites from his poems
