Default Huh...well that may change things...

So, I've been playing my Epi Dot Studio stock for a few weeks now and have been having alot of fun with it. Originally I'd planned to put a set of GFS Dream 180's into it when I have the electronics re-done on it with stacked pots so I get both a Volume and Tone control.

Tonight I hauled out the Ohm Meter and took some reasongs. The neck comes in at 8.4 and the bridge at a whopping 13.6.

Well, that explains why learning some heavier stuff lately I happened to gravitate towards that guitar.

But the downside is that it's got me re-thinking the GFS' pickups, considering the bridge clocks in at 8.3.

I could deal with a little less heat in the bridge, but truth be told I really kinda like it that way. The bridge was a little gritter than I was used to, but still I liked it. The neck felt a little underpowered and muddy. I could deal with one of those two, but not both.

So now I'm totally confounded as to what to put in there.....

Should I got with a C5 for the bridge and maybe something a little hotter for the neck? Should I take one of the pots before it gets installed and make it a no-load at maximum to open it up a bit? Is an A2 really what I should be looking at versus an A5 which seems to dominate the higher output pickups?

Definitely replace the pots with quality 500k's. I wouldn't get anything hotter for the neck (you think it's muddy now...) -- try just adjusting it closer to the strings. Try maybe a Pearly Gates neck.

As for what magnet, this is a semi-hollow and if it's a typical semi-hollow, it's got some low-mid booty on it that needs balancing. Go with A5. If you want it smoother, A2 is good. A3 is a little brighter than A2 so that's another possibility.
In 1861 as the Confederate forces were about to fire on Fort Sumter, the blue and gray had infinitely more in common than the blue and red today. What fellowship can "the truth shall set you free" ever have with "there is no truth, only points of view", or "what is truth?"

Secession would be a horror. But barring a major national crisis like a Black Death magnitude epidemic or nuclear attack to erase once and for all the myth that truth is negotiable, it is coming.

The C-5/PGn sounds about right to me for that guitar. I've been digging the Custom in my LP Goldtop for the past few days. It's a pretty impressive pickup. It cleans up just fine, but when you want an authoritative bridge tone, the Custom really shines. It has a nice way of pushing the EL-84's in the Goldtone too.

    Huh...interesting.

Now, hear me out...because I know this has been a process that's taking forever.

I'm sold on the PGn for the most part. One aspect I am debating is perhaps having a set done by MJ. I've always wanted to have a set done and this seems like a good enough reason. I figure I'm working now and have the cash, why not?

What about something like a Brobucker? It seems to fit into that general category and although it's less output than the C5, it would likely be more balanced in regard to the PGn.

BTW...the pots are ordered and on their way. I'm waiting to come to a decision about caps this week, but Hovlands seem to be the ones I'm going to go with. The pickups, well, I have to admit that it's keeping me up at night thinking about it.

Hmm....I like the C5 but, it has a bit too much output for what I wanted in a darker guitar I had. I however did like the tone. I installed a Jazz bridge (in the bridge) and it has done the trick! I am not looking back at this point! I have matched it with an APH and its golden!

Some say the 59 is like a lower output version of the C5 but, to me the Jazz bridge is closer to that description.
