I'd like to see Seymour & Co. BAN all Gay bashing threads...

The problem is that people don't recognize what they say as bashing. They say things like "I don't hate gays, just their lifestyle" or even worse, "their choices".

It's kind of similar to bi-racial marriage to me, people hated it and said that it was wrong, that whites should choose to marry other whites while blacks and asians should choose to marry each of their own groups as well. Who cares if they like each other, they choose that lifestyle and can stop it.

All in all, I agree with you Lew, but some people won't understand.

There have been more, but they generally get axed by an admin (eventually).

Honestly...I dunno if there's been any gay-bashing threads recently, though I can recall one thread that has a bit of venomous anti-gay sentiment as it progressed. Didn't start that way intentionally of course...

When I was a kid, I had a friend tell me "I'm not prejudice...I just don't like n#gg#rs." I think there should be a zero tolerence towards threads that contain any kind of discriminating references towards anyone: blacks, gays, Muslems, etc. Regardless of the reasons the poster may have for justifying his prejudice...especially prejudice based on something they've read in thier favorte religious book, whether the Bible or the Koran or anything.

If someone starts being ignorant, instead of calling the person out, ignore his post like it wasn't there and eventually they'll get the hint if they cant get a rise out of anyone. Only reply to posts adding to a conversation. Threads can't bother you if you don't read 'em. Not trying to be a pain in the rear, but lets not start banning conversations galore. Whenever a thread starts about banning a certain type of convo, more people chime in "and while we're at it, lets ban such-and-such". Everyone's got something they don't like, so rather than accommodating everyone so no ones offended, accommodate no one so everyone has to choose what they click on and choose to respond to.

Let threads like that continue so the morons expose themselves, so we know who they are for future posts of theirs. Saying "I don't approve of the gay lifestyle" or "Christianity is stupid" is the same to me as saying "Digital modelling sucks" or "I really hate racks." One person's opinion: always to be taken with a grain of salt, sometimes the whole damn shaker!

Ya know Lew, what's nice about this site is how open it is to how everyone sez what they think. Anyone can say what they want about any number of topics and I let in one ear and out another; no matter how I feel personally. Realized long time back don't worry about such things.

Once you start picking and choosing, you stifle free thought and are as bad as the worst racist, bigot, gay hater, gay lover out there.

I really like this site just like it is, and buy Surfers cause I like this site and they also sound great.

A few other sites out there, the owner kicks people out, pushes his opinion, and by doing this restricts his site and an entire full range of perspectives & thougtht. I get on all the sites but find the SD site best one out there. I hate seeing touchy feely political correctness destroying the fabric of freedom.

i see your point joelap ... but there is a bit of a broader issue involved that makes me not choose to simply stay out

specifically, anything that is not explicitely condemned is implicitly accepted ... if we 'just accept' those who bash, then we accept their viewpoints as equally worthy of consideration and respect ...

as a guest of our host, i think we have some obligation to at least hold up the level of discourse to reject comments that could be used against our host .... for example ... if a gay person were to apply for employment at SD and be turned down, could he cite the gay bashing threads/posts on the SDUGF as evidence that the company does not do enough to promote an unhostile environment and stqart a legal action? ... i dunno the answer ...

plus, they're ust plain rude and rudeness needs to be called out

Some of you may recall t4d posting about how he knew some black people who left the forum due to a few problems relating to prejudice or outright racism. I would be willing to bet that we don't see many openly gay people around here for similar reasons.

Here's the thing: any sort of reasonable person understands, if not expects, that there will always be a few bad apples who stay stupid things on a public forum. That's not really the issue. The issues are:

1. How the admins respond to such things
2. How the forum population in general responds to such things (probably more important than #1)

Think about that. Are we making this place open and inviting to gays and lesbians, or are we making it a hostile place for them?

Who knows how many good opinions and discussions we have missed out on due to people not feeling welcome here.

See here's the thing though. Most threads about that kind of stuff starts out peaceful, one person says something off color, and then the thread goes south, typically around the 2nd page or so. I understand the liability for SD and such, and TBH I think under those circumstances it might be worth it from that standpoint. But can SD really be held accountable for something someone unaffiliated with the company said?

I know Bill, you have had experiences with black members who left for reasons nearly all of us were unaware of....things were said that made certain individuals feel uncomfortable enough to leave and not come back. This why I feel the need to confront this sort of thing head on.
