Shorty is no wimp when it comes to smokin' guitar tone and technique. He is friggin' LOUD. No way does he show he is 70 years old. This man comes out blazing on the guitar. You think to yourself...save it until the end! It just gets hotter and hotter as the gig goes on!

"He [Shorty] gigged steadily through the late 1950s and 1960s, working with Little Milton, B.B. King, Lowell Fulson, Sam Cooke, Otis Rush, Johnny Copeland and T-Bone Walker. Settling down in Seattle, he married Marsha Hendrix, Jimi's stepsister." (emphasis added) "Hendrix loved his guitar-playing brother-in-law, and confessed that in 1961 and 1962 he would go AWOL from his Army base in order to catch Shorty's area performances, picking up licks and ideas."

There's a blues night on one of the rock stations around here and I remember hearing Guitar Shorty on that. He sounded phenomenal - one of the better blues players and a definite standout on the list of people that are usually played.

Dan, I'm glad you said Guitar Shorty, because he is the one who inspired Jimi. I believe that Shorty was married to Jimi's sister. Another inspiration for Jimi, was Buddy Guy, who is 73 years old, and might play louder than Shorty. I was fortunate enough to play at Buddy's club in Chicago,w/the man himself. It was April 14th, 2000! You don't forget a date like that! Dan I didn't realize you liked blues too? Have you ever been to Wed. night Blues on the Mall in GR.? If so, we might have stood right next to each other.(sorry, I missed the part where Reggie already said they were inlaws)

He uses hotrails, and boss pedals (as well as other stuff)
I thought this was funny. from an interview with him I liked your tone the other night. GS: Many guitar players come out to see me just to hear that tone. They try to find out what I'm doing to get it. That tone is between that G&L and those pickups. I'm sure Shorty's fingers have a lot to do with it too. GS: [Laughs] That's what everybody tells me. But my playing didn't turn around until I got with that G&L. It has the tone I was looking for. Everybody tells me the same thing, "Shorty, you can play through anything you want, but it's in your fingers." Some of it is, but much of it has to do with that guitar, too. |

That is all I work on when I feel like playing. Blues and rock and roll. Do you remember Guitar Shorty taking a white Strat copy and taking his time signing it the last time he performed at Blues On The Mall? That was my guitar! ![]() ![]()
