For black face tones, the Gries 35. I've had it 4 years and have no plans of selling.
![]() On the tweed side my gkoelling makes me sound like I know what I'm doing. Well, maybe...I'm not sure that's possible.

gkoelling - those amps look wonderful. I've never had much chance to try vintage fenders but I did meet a guy who had a whole bunch of 50's Fender amps. I remember plugging into a combo (can't remember what it was) that sounded tremendous. I'd really love to try some of the modern takes on old fender designs. A friend has a very old super reverb that he paid stupid money for but that particular amp I don't actually care for although he loves it - 'Don't even point'.

Here's a list of amps that were pure magic.
mid 90's white chassis Bogner Ecstasy - nothing covers as much EL-34 ground. A few other great EL-34 amps are Fargen VOS, 68-74 Marshalls, 87 Jubilee 2555/50. For 6L6's, Two Rock Custom Reverb, 65 Pro and Super Reverbs, Blues Pearls, Soldano SLO-100 and Avenger, Diezel Herbert and others. Also tweeds like 57, Bassman, Bassbreaker, Brown Concert. EL-84, vintage and handwired AC-30's, Anything connected to the Matchless family like Bad Cat, Overbuilt, and Star. Budda Amps, Top Hat King Royal. 6V6 - Tone King Meteor II, Bogner Duende, Fender Blackface Deluxe Reverb and Tweed Deluxe, Divided by 13, Carr Slant 6V, Rivera Venus.

My favorite amp I own is my Peavey Rage 258 mainly cause it's the only thing I can afford.
![]() I really like the ENGL Thunder 50. I also have been listening to sound clips of some Laneys lately and just judging by the sound clips, I like those a lot. |

Best tones I've heard come from a Vox AC-30. Great rocking distortion, great cleans, works great with a treble booster. Just a great amp all around.

I play a Marshall TSL100/1960A when I hang out with the big kids, so I guess it has to be my favorite for now.

My favorite: Dr Z Maz Jr NR-It's a chameleon of an amp as I'm able to dial in Marshall, Vox and Fender tones very easily. It's THE loudest 18w I've ever heard, very touch sensitive, takes to every pedal I've thrown at it, is very sensitive to tube changes(in a good way to tweak your tone).
Honorable mention: Dr Z EZG(Best Super Reverb I've ever played), /13 JRT 9/15(Great great plug and play marshally low wattage amp)

love my sovtek mig 50. takes pedals very well.
also much love for my Silvertone 1481, 5 watts, basically a Fender Champ clone. have a mesa .50 caliber+ for my higher gain stuff, but its a one trick pony. overall best amp ever played was a Fender Twin reverb reissue or a Deluxe reverb reissue. cant beat that fender clean. |

Mine was a Fender Deluxe Reverb....I don't have it any longer as I was getting a divorce and moving into an apartment......cannot make those sound their best at lower volumes. If I ever get back into a house of my own...I'll find another one. They take pedals..SO well!!!

My Bogner Shiva. Owned quite a few amps and this one I plugged into, smiled and just enjoyed playing. No other amp has done that to me. It was instant gratification back then and it still gives me that same feeling every time I start it up. For some folks, an amp is "just right" and the older Bogner EL-34 Shiva w/ no reverb is that one. I've owned a Shiva in one form or another for years on end and the honeymoon has never faded.

i've not played enough, but the stand-outs for me have been blackface twins, JTM45s, old JCM800s and the mesa triaxis through both the simulclass 2:90 and strategy 500 power amp; i liked the 500 but can see how the 2:90 may work better for recording.
a v-twin into just about anything will work too, IMO. i've never heard a mesa rectifier that wasn't really loud, really shrill, and constantly sounding like the crappy spot between semi-clean crunch and saturation; i've only played one of those once though, the rest has been watching mediocre bands with too much money |

Favorite amp or best amp? I'd say my favorite is a tie between my 73 100 watt completely original Marshall I had to sell just about a year ago this month and my Marshall Silver Jubilee 50 watt combo I also had to sell. What is that, the 2555?. Still breaks my heart, but I've been able to hold onto my 73 50 watt so far.
Best is my Vox AD60VTX, but only through my Hughes & Kettner G12H80 loaded 4X12. The models sound totally pro and it's a big sounding amplifier. It has all the add ons I can use and one day when I get the Vox pedal for it, it will be a complete setup. For bands playing different styles of stuff, these amps are tops when put through the right cabinet.

I used to own an old battered tweed Deluxe which as you dimed the volume the tone would get smooth and compressed-wonderful. Much later I read about Neil Young's Whizzer which was a device which sat on top of the amp and put the knobs in just the right place-there's magic in that amp!!!!

+1. I had one that was rumoured to have been owned by Bob Rock at one time. It was a heavenly beast. I should have never let that one out of my sight...

I've played and owned some super amps from old Fenders to Vox AC30 to Two Rock Custom Reverb to Bad Cat Trem Cat to Matchless DC30 to... you getting hte picture?
My favorite was my first amp. A used blackface Princeton Reverb when I was a kid first playing. I mistakenly sold it to get a 12 string and enter my John Denver phase. So, I went out and made my own version and it's definitely my favorite amp. I can get both lush trem and verb and I can smoke the 6V6 tubes and get some sweet distortion, all in a 1x10 combo that won't break my back. It's kinda fun after all the years of playing, you pretty much know what you like. I personally wont' build any amps I don't like. If I don't say so myself, I really love the amps I'm blessed to be allowed to build. |

A '59 tweed Pro I had in the 90's that went for rent, a Hiwatt 50 Bulldog, and my '54 5C3.

So far, my favorites have been a 1978 Pro Reverb I got to use at a gig once...sounded so good I forgot to turn on the OD pedal half of the time.
My friend's 1983 or 84 Deluxe Reverb ll. That's the most fun I've ever had playing an amp's lead channel at a gig. My Music Man HD-150. There's magic in those old MMs. Jonseing for a Fender Concert 112 right now...ther's one in Denver I'll snap up if my LP sells.
