And don't forget that along with the pickups, Yngwie will now need a new supplier for those leopard-print Clik straps that he uses.

By the way, I'd agree with the conjecture that Yngwie will likely have a Fender-made pickup with his name on it, perhaps in an agreement that EVH has with his EVH brand and FMIC. "Guitar Player" magazine did a review on the Custom Shop Yngwie tribute strat (the so-called Duck) and they raved about the pickups, as I recall. Maybe those or a variation of those will come out as the new YJM pickup.

Yeah, I dig it. It's a cool mix of vintage plus. Try an HS-3. Obviously there are way more things involved with getting tone than a pickup swap. But if I play either of my single-coil equipped guitars, the HS-3 I have in the neck of an old Aria definitely brings with it a certain vibe and dynamics that will facilitate the Yngwie thing. I get closer with that pickup than I do with a stock Fender or the SCN's.

That should have just had HS-3's in neck and bridge with a Fender middle pickup.

I don't think the DiMarzio's are the problem with Yngwie's tone for the past few years, it is too distorted and way over compressed for my taste.
If he isn't using the Cliploks anymore, look for the Strats to go flying all over the place. After the complete sell out of the "Play Loud" debacle, ect. I have slowly lost what little respect I have had for the maestro and I have been his biggest fan and supporter for years, the last CD sucked, I hate that bleating pig of a singer he has, ect. I actually sold my mint+++ 2004 YJM to help get the cash for my killer Washburn SS80 quilt top/maple cap neck guitar, that I hope one day someone will build a guitar close enough to the actual guitar Yngwie plays, and not Larry Lashbrook either.
He is still a great player, just business, ect.. don't hate the player, hate the game!

Who knows? Maybe Yngwie was just ready to try something different. Maybe even a true single coil. we'll just have to see what happens.

Yeah,

I think Yngwie's tone has always been more amp than anything...

and while he's probably going to use a fender pickup, he might be trying out duncans.

he might, we dont know.

Its actually a valid perspective. A lot of people would not consider this a noteworthy event.

Not a huge fan, but Yngwie can still play like a house on fire and still runs his Marshalls super loud (power tubes, not pre). Gotta respect that (I do, anyway!).

He might not endorse Dimarzio anymore, but I'm sure he'll still be using the Clip-Loks.

I hate to say it, but after the Duck not being entirely accurate, the last album being really terrible (although Unleash the Fury was pretty good overall), and his tone getting gradually thinner/brighter, I'm starting to really be disappointed in ol' Yngwie.

I think he should go back to HS-2's like he used to use in the early days (Alcatrazz, first couple solo albums). I think that would go a long way to having him sound less thin/'shrill.

And for God's sake-- have someone else write your lyrics for you. His 2 best efforts with lyrics were Eclipse and Odyssey; the former having much less "dungeons and dragons" related lyrics. a

And have someone else produce the album. It's like Prince syndrome-- too much control and no one to reign you in. That worked for Prince up until about 1989, then his efforts started sounding like he made them in a vaccuum.

Yngwie also needs a singer the caliber of Joe Lynn Turner again-- someone who doesn't do the operatic vocal style.

Ok, enough ranting....

Yeah I think the Joe Lynn Turner album was pretty good. Kind of commercial but then it was the end of the 80s, so considering that, it wasn't too cheesy. I agree a better caliber singer/songwriter would do Yngwie a world of good.

Malmsteen did a version of "Dream on" with Dio (available on Amazon).

It's not really a project (they haven't even been in the studio at the same time) but it sounds pretty killer.

As far as I'm concerned there is one way to go for Malmsteen. Of course Dio has a better gig now.
