I would look for a good deal on a USA-made G&L Legacy. They're poly finished, but a darn fine guitar--and as good as anything that's been mentioned so far.

If you want old school, then look for one of the early, pre-BBE era G&Ls, like the SC-3 or the S-500. You'll have something cool and fairly unique, from Leo Fender. But act now, prices on Leo-era G&Ls are going up.

I always wanted to try a G&L. What scares me is all the part incompatibilities. What do I do if I don't like the trem block?

I figured the OP was looking for fake-o-casters. G&L Legacy's are, as they say, "Leo getting it right." Holy crap, they play great.

I really liked their Invader as well, if you're more of a super-strat kinda guy

A valid concern. Bridge and pickguard are specialized equipment. They do play great (in my experience) out of the box... but we're tweakers by nature, aren't we?

i almost bought some tele parts, but realized they were for a G&L.

I plan on heavy tinkering.

I am also not convinced that any two-point trem will give me the sound I want. But so far I didn't meet anybody who compared 2-point and 6-point on the same guitar.

As far as G&L goes, I have no doubts about the quality but they are pretty much in the same corner as Ibanez Blazers: not compatible, not quite the same thing, and the Blazers are cheaper. And the Blazers can be hard as top-loader hardtail, which allows you to put in a vintage 6-point trem route, which eases the parts exchange pain and would err on the side of safety wrt sound from the trem.

I think the difference is that the Blazer is a cheapo (maybe not any more, vintage market being nutso) and that the G&L is ready to go out of the box - there's no reason to change anything about it - other than, you know... just to do it.
