Default Help me choose pickups for my new Predator

My new peavey predators pickups sound like a clogged toilet trying to flush.

Ok it's basswood, locking trem.

I play metal/shred/blues.

I have some ideas myself but i want some opinions of what you guys would do.

Trouble is, there's so many different ways to go. The new Predator is SSS, right? A Lil 59 in the neck would be a good start. That would cover the "blues" aspect fairly well.

Ah . . . thats right. You said that in another post.

Well, a Mayhem set is a good choice too. Don't let the "Distortion" name throw you. I think they have a great clean sound, and they split fantastic. I'm going to get another one to go with the one I have in the neck of my Patriot in the next week or so.

I think there's a few folks that would attest to the Distortion set. Travis?

I think that may be the way to go, since my amp is pretty low gain on its own.

The Distortion split is one of my favorite "clean" sounds. Its one of the reasons I haven't gotten around to putting a bridge pup in that guitar.

Here's a thread where I did a "clean" clip with the Distortion split.

A distortion set would be a fine choice...I had a DD in a basswood super strat once...killer guitar! If you have a 5 way switch and you get a mega or a super switch you can do lots of options with spliting!

In my PRS I've got a Distortion/custom hybrid, and the split sound of the distortion is great! You could go with the neck model too, I've never tried it myself.

My buddy's predator has a cool rails, hot rails, and Custom Custom. I REALLY like the Custom Custom's tone. Split the pup sounds stratty but smooth like the A2Ps.

Predators are GREAT guitars.

Well, my predator isn't basswood (AFAIK), but I love the CC in the bridge. I don't have any clips of it by itself, though. I hope to be getting around to that shortly. I haven't had much experience with the distortion.

Thanks for the replies. It's probably gonna be distortion set with coil splitting. I don't want to go with Custom Custom, because i dont think it would work well with basswood+a mid heavy amp. I was worried about the distortion set at first because i didnt want to lose my cleans. I play jazz and blues often. It looks like i'll be able to get my metal/shred sounds, and jazz/blues sounds split.

If you want to go to the trouble, or expense a distortion/custom hybrid. I was seriously digging on mine today at lunch.

can i make a suggestion. if your predator has a blade switch, use a super switch and wire it up like fender's HH strats. here's the rundown, bridge to neck:

1. full bridge
2. bridge and neck split (inner coils i believe) (parallel)
3. bridge and neck full (parallel)
4. neck split (outer coil only)
5. neck full

that would be the optimum in my opinion

I was just looking at this on Peavey's site. It looks like a 3-way toggle to me, but not sure. The pics not that clear.

Yes, it's a 3-way switch. I'd prefer to stay with Duncans, but does a Humbucker From Hell really sound like a single coil?
