Custom Guitar Spotlight - John Bolin SUPER MODEL®

Talk about voodoo and vibe, here’s a piece dripping with both. Created by Idaho’s ace guitar builder, John Bolin, custom builder for Keith Richards, Steve Miller, and a host of expert players, this distressed beauty is aptly dubbed. “The Super Model®” and was commissioned by Billy F Gibbons, ZZ Top axe-slinger and long-time Bolin customer.

While she looks somewhat traditional, the “The Super Model®” is anything but. She measures 22 frets and has 24.625 inches of beautifully modeled maple neck spec’d exactly to Billy’s legendary ‘59 ‘Burst, “Pearly Gates.” Like all super models, Bolin’s is a radically reduced-weight, Swamp Ash body which Bolin describes as, “Enlightened.”

The “The Super Model®” features a Custom Shop dual-coil bridge pickup, patterned after Seymour’s Pearly Gates™ humbucker. Like its big brother, it’s equipped with the notorious alnico magnet for smooth distortion and present pinched harmonics.

Look carefully to note Billy’s eccentric appointments; Glendale’s Billy Gibbons “Strate-Plate®,” the Bolin “Speed-Knob®” combo, solid gold frets, a vintage Lucky in the neck pickup cavity and a “hand-rolled” in the cable channel.
