Yngwie J Malmsteen’s signature pickup

YJM Fury

Guitarists everywhere share a common obsession: the relentless pursuit of perfect tone. This quest haunts players from all styles and levels: jazz to rock, beginners to experienced players, even axe-slinging metal virtuoso legends . Perfect tone is an obsessive pursuit that never subsides. So, when legendary axe-slinging metal virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen said he wanted to take his tone to the next level, we listened.

No other guitarist unleashes the fury like Yngwie J. Malmsteen. Time magazine placed him in the top ten guitar players of all time. His influence is undeniable. His technique is unparalleled. So his pickups had to be as equally unparalleled.

So, how did we go about building a custom pickup for such a legend? It all started with Seymour’s original Stack® design; hum-canceling single-coil-sized pickups.  Then we redesigned, reshaped, reformed, and meticulously tweaked each aspect to ensure we capture Yngwie’s unique playing style and personal tonal desires. Yngwie himself worked diligently with Seymour and our special breed of tone masters and after hundreds of hours of intense tone pursuit, their labor of love yielded the STK-S10 YJM Fury.

The YJM series includes a dedicated bridge pickup as well as a separate neck/middle pickup, representing two highly individual customized voices. In the bridge position, Yngwie requested more aggressive drive and power. (Only he said it with a cool Swedish accent.) The neck pickup needed to capture Yngwie’s fluid left hand technique, with his high speed picking attack, and sweep-picked arpeggios. These pickups sound sweet and fluid, but with more articulation and responsiveness to dynamics.

They’re recommended for any fast playing style including neo-classical, shred, hard rock, power metal, and heavy metal. The YJM Fury is available with white, off-white, or black covers. In fact, the YJM Fury now comes pre-installed on Yngwie’s signature series Fender® YJM Strat®, complete with his preferred C-shaped, scalloped guitar neck. But for players who prefer a more standard neck, the YJM Fury works well with any ax that utilizes traditional single-coil-size Strat pickups and can directly retrofit most single-coil equipped guitars.
