    Practice. Single biggest difference.

After that it would be the Missing Link. Since my VHT Valvulator had crapped out, I'd been playing without a tube buffer and the tone had suffered, now I have that "direct to amp" tone back.

that was the big one. yanking the Boss NS-2...wow.

It made me realize that I was compensating for its tone-suck by turning up knobs. After removing it, I could turn the gain and treble down and get the same timbre and bite that I had when it was in the chain.

have 10 pedals stacked neatly out of the way. silver, yellow, green, blue, purple...looks like a kids game of some kind to test aptitude or color coordination or somethin

    ...and practice, too....

Sitting there for about an hour a day, unplugged, running through chord changes, voicings, technique and phrasing. I don't think I've touched an amp in about a week..

Got back to a basic style sweet sounding amp (not multi channel or anything fancy), ensuring the action wasn't too low on my guitars, got a Peterson Strobostomp tuner and practised more. The best thing I did was to get my amps, they have great sound... but there's nothing to hide behind. Even when the drive is set quite high it's still crystal clear and when you F*Łk up you know it, it sort of forces you to try harder and not be sloppy. The tuner has helped because the accuracy of my tuning is such that I'm not trying to compensate for bad tuning if that makes any sense? All I know is that it's has helped alot personally and within the band as we tune all the guitars with it, and for dual guitar parts( ala Lizzy ) it sounds MUCH better.

Just a side note, one of my favorite players is Dave Meniketti, and he practises unplugged.... IMO one of the great players out there!

Started using a mic on my amp instead of just letting it struggle with everyone around me.

Found a dirt box I like - the Proco Turbo Rat. Might not be boutique but it is the right one for me.

I now record clean direct, then apply amp sims later. you can really hear a lot of mistakes playing with zero distortion.

Practice, practice, practice. And for recording, amp EQ and mic placement are huge...

Used to use Fender heavy pics, but now use Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm picks. They accentuated my picking errors, so I've become a cleaner and faster picker.
General practice of course, things like now being able to do heavy and screaming vibrato and smoother legato technique.

For metal, I turned the gain on my TSL down from 10 to 7 and lowered the pickups a hair. No more feedback and better definition.

I've backed off the gain on my Mesa, and begun paying more attention to picking dynamics. That's made my playing more consistent and improved my control. It's helped me to rely less on variables beyond my control.

To answer the question, Crunch Box pedal - awesome addition!

I've just been turning it on. Really. Lately I've been wanting to play more. Some kind of crazy inspiration and I guess I'm starting to hear beautiful tone all over again.

Also trying out a little harder picks, Dunlops 1.14 Tortex Triangles as opposed to my regular 0.88 and 0.58

I try not to practice too much as it interferes with my uninspired sloppy playing. The single greatest improvement in tone came from turning the amp up a notch and turning the pedals down ..... especially backing off on the compressor. The Eminence Cannabis Rex helped too.

Aside from a solid practice routine. I practice usually every day for 45 minutes on acoustic in the morning and I practice a good solid hour on electric in the evening, That said............ I bought a Komet!

Changing my cables on my board from the cheap-ass Hosas to Dimarzio's ... no more noise. Got a Tube amp (Peavey Classic 30), some good dirt boxes (Bad Monkey and Metal Muff) and just went nuts. for once, i'm about 92% happy with my tone. The other 8% is the fact that the bad monkey sounds better with singles than buckers.
