Do they do this on purpose so you don't know what you have for sure unless you go out and buy new ones:?

    Who knows.

I can tell you off the top of my head that the Texas Specials and 57/62's I've had were built on fiber bobbins and had cloth push-back wire. The only pickups I've seen from Fender that have had plastic bobbins and modern hook up wire along with alnico poles have been the Am Std pickups and some 90's MIJ models.
    Ain't nothin' but a G thang, baby.

I know this is out of an american standard. Either mid 90's or mid 2000's. It has staggered poles also.

Tex-Mex pickups have plastic bobbins and regular hookup wire.
