Default Guitar Collector Show Day -My first one in forever (Aside from NAMM)

Except for NAMM, I haven't been to a guitar show in decades, so went today to the new inaugural Atlanta Guitar Show.

20 Dollar entry, and no coming back the next day without re-paying (strange), so it really kept the crowds down to just serious buyers, also without crowds it was less scary walking past card table after card table of guitar on stands that are 2k-30k EACH -lots of 30k+ guitars too. so perhaps that was the organizers intent -but I don't know how a show like this survives as somewhat exclusive. Most dealers had everything marked at or above market value, and with the internet setting a market price accessible instantly -there were no "deals" to be had unless you found someone motivated for a reason -everyone is so educated , there were no diamonds in the rough really.

Honestly, as expected, it was mostly a Gibson Vintage 335/LP/SG show, with Vintage Fender Teles/Jazz/Strat, Martin, and everything vintage Gretsch of course. The had a not for sale museum section (I didn't take any pics) Not as many Super Strats as I expected but they are easy to spot with their more often than not dumb looking headstock (why do so many super start building have no artistic touch to their headstock and instead have a triangle?}, but plently of interesting relic'd stuff (not my thing but cool), but most interesting were some custom guitar and amp builders that were very interesting and I respect their creativity and willingness not to copy the obvious ones. There were enough Mosrites, Gibson Acoustics, Ibanez, Travis Beans, Rickenbackers, and other weirder ones to keep my interest too. There was a Tokai Les Paul that was really amazing BTW

Anyways, had a good time -would go again and a decent first effort -but I definitely can think of 10 ways to tweak this for next year.

    Here are the pics...Enjoy

Glad you enjoyed it. However your description makes me think that I'd rather spend $20 on gasoline to use to tour all the pawn shops within 100 miles.
Actually, thinking of spending about the same to go see the Musical Instrument Museum over in Scottsdale next month. I won't be buying anything from there either, but I've heard that they have a great collection.

Cool trip. What's with the stack of Tele bodies? Was the "custom builder" Benedetto?

Yeah, totally, 20 bucks is I think meant to make it somewhat "serious" . -but agreed, I haven't been to one in forever -so it was cool -but had I been to any or many in a while it wouldn't have been as cool -especially with a no returns and door cost.

Honestly, In London UK in the West End, you can go to the 8 or 10 Kent St. guitar shops see pretty much everything vintage at this show -and for free.

Yes Benedetto from Savannah -stellar Jazz guitars -i thought Mincer would dig their modern Jazz solid body

The stack was a guy who builds bodies in all styles.

Sweet. I didn't realize I lived that close to Benedetto. Seymour Duncan makes their pickups.

Like I said, it was a bit "serious" on purpose, I gather. but I wish there was more 800-1500 guitars. Ones I can play out with, leave onstage after sound check and on stage after show.

I would say 90% of guitars were more than 1500.00 and 30% were more than 4k and 10% were more than 8k.

The whole time you are looking through these guitars, the back of your mind is just repeating "an import version of the same guitar with some new tuners and Duncans set up properly could smoke the vintage version in many cases"

I just couldn’t play an instrument in that price range in a live situation. They get too banged up. Unintentionally, mostly.
I bought my LP Standard brand new. I traded I a bunch of stuff I didn’t use and financed the rest. I paid a fair price considering. It’s my #1 and it has some bumps and bruises. That’s ok though because I bought it because it was meant to be played.
All of my other guitars are in a much more reasonable price range. Most bought used too.

I don't usually trust guys who always have pristine guitars only -do they play them? nicks and bumps are the scars who make you who you are!

Awesome pics... thanks for sharing them!

I wish there were more events like this that go on... and it seems that they NEVER happen particularly close to me! I’d love to go just window shop... but I think I’d like one even more if it had guitars that were more reasonably accessible. I have trouble getting GAS over instruments that are so far out of my price range.

Man, those Benedetto are amazing. I also dig the Ibanez McLaughlin-esque double neck. I'd never own such a beast, but it is really cool to see.

That's a right classy Mustang in there! And the hollows and semi-hollows have me drooling! Interested to see how/if this trade show grows!
