    Default EMG 57/66 passive alternative

I have a PRS SE Custom 24 with a Floyd Rose that I need new pickups for. The HFS in the bridge is good, but not great. It's too one-dimensional. The Vintage Bass in the neck is pure mud. I really like the tone of the 57 and 66, but I would prefer passive pickups to split the coils. Are there any good passive substitutes? I'm thinking maybe a passive EMG set or Alnico Black Hawks. I'd like to get Seymour Duncans if they get reasonably close, but I haven't played a set that does. That's not to say that it doesn't exist, though. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

What amp, pedals, and style of music are you playing?

I have a CU24 SE with the same pickups and very much prefer them to several replacements. Different strokes, but neither my SE Vintage Bass nor the real one in my S2 are muddy at all.

Maybe muddy is the wrong word. The pickups are just very mismatched. The bridge is bright and clear, and the neck is dark and squishy. I know I like the 57/66 set, so I want to try to get that sound out of passive pickups.

Fair enough. Maybe try something that's a PAF neck and a hot PAF bridge.

They do make a 57/66 set that is split able, but they dont sell em on their site yet. Esp/ltd guitars are the only ones I've seen em in.

I've seen those pickups. I'm considering them because I know I'll like them, but I want to stick with passive pickups if it's possible.

I think passive emgs would disappoint. 15 years ago I had the Alexi Laiho ones (HZ or something) and the 81/60 crushed them for metal.

    Are black winters good split?
