Where did you get your first material for a guitar pickup?

Last Updated on October 16th, 2019

The first material I found for fabricating guitar bobbins came from old drum cases made from Vulcanized Fibre. I got my first Vulcanized Fibre from Jim Sharp, the drummer in one of my first bands called “The Flintones” in Gibbstown, New Jersey during the 60s. Most cases where 1/16″ thick and just right to fabricate the parts need to make several models of pickups. I could make Gibson style P-90 bobbins and many styles of Fender pickups. All done with a pair of metal cutting shears, files, center punch, drill press and drills for the desired hole diameter. I would rough out the parts and square the edges with a block of wood and sandpaper.

I don’t think my drummer ever appreciated me cutting up his old drum cases but, he knew what I was trying to do.
