Alex is an original member of the seminal thrash metal band Testament and a former student of guitarist Joe Satriani. Alex was working on the second Testament album when he happened to capture a televised performance of Miles Davis. This inspired an intense interest in jazz, leading to numerous private studies including Mark Levine, Tuck Andress and legendary jazz educator Charlie Banacos. Eventually, Alex left his native Berkeley, California and relocated to New York City, where he earned a BA in jazz studies from New School University’s jazz program (class of 2001) and formed an award winning trio and recorded four albums. In 2005 Alex rejoined Testament and helped bring the band back to the forefront of metal.
