Do different players sound the same playing the same instrument?

I’ve experienced this first hand when doing the benefit “ARMS” for the late Ronnie Laine during the ’80s. I was on the road with Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page. While they were performing at the LA Forum I had a small Fender Princeton Reverb as a practice amp back stage along with a modified Fender re-issue Stratocaster that was given to us by Dan Smith at Fender. While working on various pickguards for Jeff, he picked up the instrument and started playing his style was very distinctive. Next Eric came in before his set and played on it for awhile and to my amazement the instrument changed to Eric’s style of playing and finally Jimmy Page came in and again the same guitar sounded completely different and sounding like Jimmy doing his thing. It really opened my eyes and ears to see that so much of an instruments sound comes from the hands and technique of the player.
