How are alnico bar magnets made?

Last Updated on October 17th, 2019

All grades of cast Alnico magnets can be made by Shell or Baked sand molding. Sand casting in “Green” sand is used for larger magnets. The cast Alnico are typically molded in this way too for many shapes and fabrications. Investment casting, also known as lost wax casting, is done when the complexity of a magnet’s shape doesn’t permit Shell or Baked sand molding. The surface of sand cast magnets can either be used stock or machined for proper surfaces or dimensions. Typically a plate of bar stock is molded to close tolerances, cut and surface ground to the customers specifications. There are fewer and fewer molding houses that make bar and rod stock for our applications.
