What is buzz?

Last Updated on October 16th, 2019

Buzz is usually associated with external electrical interference and better grounding and perhaps radio frequencies filters can be used for eliminating interference in guitar and basses. Proper grounding of amplifier and effect devices will help reduce unwanted RF interference or buzz. When ever possible, the ground system should be continuous and the shields of the system tied to a single point. Cable shields must be continuous without breaks or high resistance solder joints. It is essential that the shielding be connected to the transmission ground at the point that will not permit RF frequency energy to be picked up through the transmission or hot conductor.

Keeping covers on humbucking pickups helps reduce unwanted buzz or electrical interference. Shielding tapes must be totally grounded to work properly. And putting shielding tape around pickups doesn’t keep the RF noise from entering the coils through the vulcanized fibre or plastic top of a bobbin.
