Shielding can be done with several components such as conductive paints, copper and aluminum foils with adhesive have been used. Conductive paints can decrease the value of your instrument if improperly used and can react with the various type finishes used. It can drip onto the surface and cause plastics to melt or distort. It is also hard to remove especially if you realize your instrument is of value. Copper foils best work with conductive adhesives if several layers or areas are foiled. Some copper tapes do not conduct and do no good if they can’t be grounded to the electrical system of the instrument. Aluminum foils with adhesive are good as long as you don’t need to solder anything to them. They usually work best when used to ground the switch, volume and tone controls on various Stratocaster pickguards. Shielding works best for grounding components and switches. Becareful not to touch any exposed electrical components such as eyelet’s or terminals to the ground as they may short out and the instrument can stop working.
