Description

The ’59/Custom Hybrid is a medium output humbucker pickup that sparkles with upper midrange harmonic content and grit. The brainchild of our incredibly knowledgeable forum members, this humbucker is the result of experimental coil swapping in order to push into new tonal territory. The mismatched coils, and the alnico 5 bar magnet keep the low end nice and tight and give the mids a grind that is perfect for hard rock and metal. Plenty of crunch and bite on top as well. When split, you get the Custom’s 7k coil for a more distinct single coil sound. Pair with the ’59 neck or Jazz neck model for a nicely balanced setup.

Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, the 59/Custom Hybrid medium output humbucker pickup uses mismatched coils, an alnico 5 bar magnet, nickel silver short leg bottom plate, 4-conductor lead wire for multiple wiring options, is vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance, and is available in standard humbucker or Trembucker spacing.

This is the pickup I've been looking for! Very well balanced, and sounds great tapped! My music runs the gambit from crystal clean to progressive metal tinged. The 59 Custom Hybrid paired with the Sentient in the neck is the perfect combo.

I ordered the SD custom

I ordered the SD custom hybrid trembucker to replace an AH Metal Fatigue, which I simply couldn't love. Despite initial skepticism over the hybrid 59's somewhat boxy-sounding mid boost, it pairs well with the stock '59 in neck position - and presents many sonic possibilities the AH trembucker cannot render. Wiring is: ObsidianWire custom 6-way harness (bridge-both-neck, volume pull pot for coil split). Amp used to test: Mesa F50, 1967 Mullard ECC83/12AX7 in V1. Clean channel, via EVM-12L xtn cab (TL806). I'm not interested in so-called heavy metal tones with constant overdrive/distortion. I love the '59 in neck position, and previously ordered a std '59 trembucker to replace the Metal Fatigue. Unfortunately it fell short of my hopes, and sounded rather generic. It will take a few more hours to get familiarized with the new '59 custom hybrid. Looking forward to it!

I have this on an

I have this on an LP in the bridge position. Everything you would expect is there in this position. Less bass, nice mid's and highs. An unexpected bonus is the middle position when paired with a JB in the neck position. The imbalanced hum bucker mixed with a full bodied neck pickup makes for a nice chimey warm combination. I never used the middle that much in the past but with this combination, I feel like it's my favorite for this guitar.

Installed the 59' Custom Hybrid

Installed the 59' Custom Hybrid in the bridge and 59' Model in the neck to give this Les Paul an incredible transformation into a new world of ultimate tone variations using the split coil setup. Seymour Duncan hit a grand slam with these pups.

The pickup was not quite

The pickup was not quite what I was looking for so I returned it for an Alnico II Pro bridge pickup. With that said, the pickup was a great quality pickup but the Alnico II Pro pickup was more in line with what I like. The customer support is excellent, and I will continue to turn to Seymour Duncan for pickups for all my guitars.

Great replacement bridge pickup with

Great replacement bridge pickup with medium output without being too hot... cleans up nicely, with tight bass that leans toward treble that isn't brittle or too biting.

A successful experiment!

I thought of trying the SH-16 in a newly acquired guitar. I just recently outfitted both my SGs with 59s neck and bridge after having to settles for 59s in my LP because no one my usual PAF alnico II of a popular brand in stock, so after reading the specs I decided to give them a shot. I threw some Nickle covers on em and wow! loved the vintage chime, especially in the middle position! (Duane Allman).... I typically play harder Rock/Metal, I was using a "+" PAF in bridge, so I decided to go Hybrid59. Whoa!!!! it is punchy without being pushy (mushy) Articulate A.F.! It's a bit hotter than the standard PAF levels, buy not enough to cause havoc...(unwanted feedback) with changing your picking technique you can get a mild "cocked wah" tone easily... cleans up nice too when rolled back. My new fav!!! I just ordered a one to replace a pup in another guitar. SOLID!

The 59/Custom Hybrid was exactly

The 59/Custom Hybrid was exactly what I was looking for. My HSS Strat has been SSL-1's with a JB Trembucker bridge, which was awesome, a great combination. However I now have three other guitars which cover a lot of tonal territory, so I no long need my Strat to be an everything guitar. My heavy humbucker tone is now carried by a Les Paul. I wanted my Strat to be a little less "hard rock" and more classic rock in the bridge. More defined and clear, yet having plenty of beef. I also wanted a better position 2 quack and the split Hybrid delivered exactly what I wanted. The JB is a great pickup, but the 59/Custom Hybrid filled the role much more specifically for what I need now. Great pickup!

The stock Gibson pickup in

The stock Gibson pickup in my SG was lacking in some areas of output and tone. This 59 Hybrid changed all that. The design of this pickup retains the clarity and articulation at lower volumes of a PAF, But goes into overdrive territory at full volume which is perfect for my solid mahogany guitar. Just what I was looking for.

Put this in the bridge

Put this in the bridge of my 90’s SG Standard. Short story: it GREAT. Solid tones from classic rock to punk and fuzzy doom. I can’t believe I waited so long to get rid and f theirs dull 490s. Fairly compressed but with a good frequency spectrum. Sounds great in series or parallel. Duncan is never the wrong choice.

Great For HSS Strats

I bought this humbucker for a Godin Session guitar my wife gave me for Christmas 2020. The pickups in the Godin were not what I thought a strat should sound like and the humbucker was very weak sounding. So I went to SD’s pickup finder and told them whatI was looking for, they suggested SSL-1s in the neck and middle and the 59 custom hybrid in the bridge which surprised me. I would have figured a pearly gates. Well I went ahead and ordered vintage flat single coils (because the radius was 12”) and the 59 custom hybrid. I wired the guitar up with new pots and a coil split on the bridge pu and all I can say is wow. The humbucker matches very well with the single coils and when split it fits right into the mix. I couldn’t believe how good this combo sounded. Fantastic humbucker, clear and balanced well. Great clean tones and because it’s fairly hot it pushes the clean channel to a nice crunch. On distortion it shines through, maintaining clearness no matter how much drive I throw at it. Great pickup once again. I can’t say enough about it. I waited 4 months after putting it in this guitar before writing this review just to make sure I was still in love with this pickup.

This is becoming my favorite pickup

Playing mostly bluesy-rock, hard rock, punk and classic metal, I've been using the JB model on most my guitars for quite a while, but trying this '59/Custom Hybrid has been enlightening. Not as harsh in the highs and not as hot as the JB, but hotter than PAF-style pups seems to be a perfect balance for me. Love it

Unexpected

I decided to try this one at the urging of a buddy at a local luthier shop. I wanted to replace the pickups in my Sterling JP150, they were much too hot and harsh for my tastes. I knew I wanted a jazz in the neck, so he recommended this in the bridge. Great choice. We also replaced the volume pot with a push push to allow single coil tapping. This pickup is versatile. It’s chimey and spanky in single coil mode, but warm and a hint hairy in humbucker mode. I was impressed with how nicely it goes from clean to gain, no clarity lost whatsoever. Solid pickup!

Tried and Tested

I have been through just about every production line pickup on the market from Seymour to EMGs, Dimarzio, Frailin', JBE, Gibson, Fender and so much more. There is not another pickup that rings out like this one. Easily the most dynamic harmonics I've played through on a Les Paul, Super strat and SG. This has the push of a high output humbucker but with a mellow PAF response with just a little less volume on the guitar. Hands down the best split coil humbucker I've played. Even over the p-rails/triple shot.

Perfect for my HSS Strat

I used this with two Hendrix-inspired vintage strat single coils. I was worried about how they would sound together, but I couldn’t be happier. First, this is an absolutely gorgeous pickup. It’s exactly as versatile and articulate as advertised. More interesting and surprising to me is how well it pairs with my single coils. I did an elaborate custom wiring to get a variety of split/series options, and put the humbucker on its own 500k pots. I find that I can set my volume and EQ and switch between pickups seamlessly. Splitting to the custom coil sounds better than many single coils, and I feel like I haven’t compromised the classic Strat bridge single coil tones. The middle/custom coil combination gives the classic Strat RWRP quack, which I was worried I would lose. Pairing a single coil with it as humbucker works equally well, it doesn’t dominate the mix. Truly an excellent, versatile product.

This is currently my favorite model pickup from Seymour Duncan

There are so many great pickups from Seymour Duncan and this pickup stands out. There is a well rounded bass and sweet midrange for the 59 Custom Hybrid. I love the 59 and I love the Custom pickups. This pickup is great for chords and single notes. I also love this pickup tapped. This sounds clear and chimey when tapped with enough bass that it doesn't get lost in a mix.

My SG is now complete.

Never liked Gibson's stock bridge pickup, don't like the microphonic ringing when playing with a lot of gain. I tried a few other kinds from SD, like the Slash AP2 and the Duncan custom, but still wasn't satisfied. Those sound really good clean and with subtle overdrive, but are kinda flubby with a lot of gain. This 59 custom hybrid rocks! It has increased mids that the others lack, and now I can get a ripping gain tone while still sounding good clean. I'm happy now and glad that I took the chance on it. Soon I will get a push pull pot so that I can experience the split coil sound of it, which the SD website description praises. After hearing how good both coils sound, I believe the split will sound great also. If you want a pickup that's wide ranging from blues, to classic rock, to metal, this is it.
