Description

In the late 70s, Seymour Duncan was well known as the go-to guy for players that wanted something custom. Sometime in ‘78, Eddie Van Halen gave him a P.A.F. to experiment with, along with instructions to rewind it with the intent to enhance the reproduction of artificial harmonics and “hot wind” a little for some extra “juice”.

The Seymour Duncan ‘78 Model humbucker is the result of that experiment. Loaded with an Alnico 2 magnet and wound to the exact same hot specs as that original P.A.F. rewind, the ‘78’s magnet and output combination lends itself to a warm crunch with biting leads and overtone laden tapped runs. While the ‘78 Model was not the final destination for Eddie, it offers players the opportunity to revisit a waypoint in the early days of his legendary pursuit of the ultimate tone.

If you’re a player who demands a high-performance tone and wants the classic hard rockin’ rhythm crunch, articulate picked harmonics for your tapped solos and whammy bar acrobatics, the ‘78 Model just may be your ticket.

Great brand, great pup!

This pickup is everything I was looking for. It is extremely dynamic as tapping, harmonics, hammer ons, pull offs, and slides are very easy to play. This pup was designed to shred - and sounds damn good while doing it. This pickup also cleans up fairly well as it has a good amount of bite, and its crunch tone has a very nice growl. If you're looking for that shred/brown sound, or any hard rock tone (metal, grunge, punk, alternative) the '78 nails it. Do yourself a favor and buy it. Thank you SD for always being polite and knowledgeable. Along with your amazing products, your commitment towards customer care keeps me a loyal user, buyer.

First off - Seymour Duncan

First off - Seymour Duncan and their staff is always welcoming, nice, and knowledgeable. I love this brand as the worker’s passion and kindness keeps making me come back. This pickup is absolutely everything I wanted. It has the perfect amount of bite and thickness. It is extremely responsive for harmonics and tapping, this pup rips on a cranked amp with gain. It also cleans up very nice and has a slight growl to it with lighter crunch EQ. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a dynamic shred/brown sound or anything hard rock, as it also nails alot of metal, grunge, punk, and alternative rock. If you’ve been looking for a sign to pull the trigger, this is it!

I swapped the bridge Pearly Gates on my US Lone Star Strat for the 78 Model. So far, I am impressed with the tone. I kept the Pearly Gates for when I decide to reinstall it later.

Great pickup! The only issue

Great pickup! The only issue was that I had to drill a hole in my Fender Stratocaster pickguard as it originally had 2+1 mounting instead of standard 2 screws but that's more a Fender problem. Out of 3 holes on the Trembucker only the middle one has a thread. I was able to install it myself with my dad after watching the Seymour Duncan Pickup Installation course 101. Great way to learn the basics but in the reality was a bit more complex as my guitar also had an S-1 switch.

I’m really glad I got

I’m really glad I got this pickup. It does Van Halen tones really well and, when running through my Marshall DSL, sounds kind of like a fusion with Ratt. To be honest, it actually took me a few days to get used to the sound of this pickup because the pickup I replaced it with was a stock ESP pickup with really dark/muddy sound (which didn’t match my all-maple guitar very well) and having owned the guitar for 10 years, that was the sound that I was used to. So when I plopped this hot-wind PAF-style pickup on there, I was completely thrown by the change in sound. Once I re-dialed in my amp, I knew I’d made the right choice. It’s got no mud at all, very tight bottom end, and a hot, bitey top end giving you that iconic brown sound. It’s also very clear, even with high gain in the amp you can really hear the individual notes of a chord. I wouldn’t say it’s a very versatile pickup (not like the JB), and it doesn’t have to be because it makes its tone and it does it really well.

The real thing. Exactly what I was looking for.

This is the perfect match for my Duncan Custom 5 (bridge) installed on my PRS Custom 24. Had a Jazz on the Neck position and it didn't feel right. Too glassy, very thin. Needed something more bassy with a little more output to match the Custom 5. Now everything's sublime. I think it's the Alnico 2.

PAF Clarity with Some Extra Oomph

Exactly as described. A vintage sounding PAF with a little extra juice. After using DiMarzio PAF style pickups for the last decade, I decided to try something new for my latest Telecaster build. Glad I did. This thing nailed the Brown Sound going straight into my Marshall Plexi, without the need for any additional boost. BUT it retained the clarity of a classic PAF. Paired wonderfully with a Jazz in the neck.

Hot enough, but not overpowering.

Hot enough, but not overpowering. Closer to my Slash bridge pickup than my Custom 5 or my '59. Dropped into Les Paul, plugged into Marshall JTM45, then Blackstar HT5, then Deluxe Reverb with Keeley Oxblood, then JCM2000 through 1960VA cab, played Panama, Runnin' with the Devil, Unchained, etc. Probably got the closest I've gotten to those tones.

I met Seymour Duncan in

I met Seymour Duncan in 1982, in Santa Barbara while going to UCSB, tagging along with a bass playing friend going after a Qtr pounder PU for his bass I was already convinced that speakers (I bought an EVM 12L that year) and PU’s are key to a good sound, but I didn’t Buy my first SD product until 1987, the ‘78 PU is currently being installed, but his work has never disappointed. All my guitars have SD pick ups. I have a vapor trail delay as well. This one is going in a PRS SE Standard hollowbody.

78 model neck

I searched high and low to find the right neck pickup to go with my custom shop 78 bridge pickup. I tried a jazz, phat cat even Dimarzio super 2 with a super distortion in my les Paul. I did not really care for any of them, none of them were awful just not what I wanted. I bought the 78 neck and almost instantly knew it was right. I use both pickup on for most of my leads.

The ‘78 Model pickups sound

The ‘78 Model pickups sound great. Have a lot of clarity, nice bassy tone in the neck, plenty of highs on both. Not muddy at all and with my amp overdriven they get a nice heave tone. They can rock for sure!!! Customer service helped me greatly with exchange of a previous pair I purchased, but I wanted these. The customer service rep Chris spent some time talking me through some different models to help me choose what I did. Awesome experience. Would recommend.
