Ultra-high output with a huge sound, the Invader (SH-8) has a look and sound like no other pickup. The Invader is loud, vicious, and unapologetic. Somewhat surprisingly, the Invader neck model couples intimidating looks with a warm, restrained sound—the perfect partner to the high output Invader bridge humbucker.

Description

Installing an Invader changes your guitar’s DNA. No matter how dangerous your stock pickup claims to sound, the Invader will transform your guitar into the mean, heavy-sounding beast you always knew it could be. The Invader’s power comes from the combination of specially overwound coils, three large ceramic magnets, and its striking, oversized metal oxide pole pieces. These unique pole pieces expand the overall magnetic field and widen the frequency spectrum, which is why every note played through an Invader sounds so rich and massive. The ceramic magnets add depth and clarity while the large hex caps deliver smooth string-to-string balance.

The Invader delivers the thickest, deepest low-end response of any passive pickup we make. Chords sound almost subsonic with lower tunings, but balance nicely with the crunchy treble, keeping everything well defined. While the Invader bridge looks mean and vicious, because it is mean and vicious, the Invader neck humbucker is surprisingly warm and smooth, despite its intimidating looks, and yields a thick crunch and moaning sustain.

Hand built in our Santa Barbara, CA factory, the Invader features three large ceramic bar magnets, oversized metal oxide poles, nickel silver bottom plate, 4-conductor lead wire for multiple wiring options, and is vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance. The Invader is available in 6, 7, and 8-String passive and active mount options.

Recent "Inheritor" of Invader Bridge pickup

I recently purchased an old Kramer Pacer (approx. 1986 vintage) with an Invader bridge pickup (suspected to be of late '80s vintage, and has the accumulated schmutz to back up that estimated age on the tape wrapping the coils). Added a series-parallel switch to it, and it sounds great with the other two pickups (SD Strat pickups of some stripe, labeled "1R" and stamped SD 2 87) on a Chandler replacement pickguard (possibly as part of a loaded pickguard kit?). I lowered the pickup a bit and raised three poles on each coil to grab a little "Wide Range" vibe, and, it sounds surprisingly good and hot-Strat/Tele-like on its own (but with the ice-pick left out and a bit more low end weight). The 'quack' with bridge (in parallel) and the middle pickup is superb. Bridge alone has a wonderful, smoother/chunkier hot-Strat/Tele vibe going on. Flip the switch to series mode, and, with the poles raised as described, it delivers a nice bit of slightly-hot P-90 vibe in there. All of this from a pickup that I associated with '80s headbanger metal, and would probably never have purchased due to that preconceived notion (probably related to the way SD markets this pickup)....

I play mostly hard rock

I play mostly hard rock and old metal so the fact that this is an over wound super hot pickup really does work for me. I gave only 4 stars but that isn't really the fault of the pickup but more about what I chose to purchase. I do like the power output of the pickup but there isn't any crunch roll off at the volume pot. That's why I say more my fault than anything. It fit well and looks pretty darn good in my guitar. I built this guitar so I really researched and stressed over what pickup to use and I'm happy with the invader.

Invader set w/ Les Paul Custom

I installed the Invader set in my Les Paul Custom, the bridge is massive sounding and very responsive to rolling down the volume. The stunning change was I coil split the neck, both coils with high gain, it is searing your face, split the coils and roll the volume down a little and it shimmers. Incredibly versatile pickups and mindblowing tones

Great Death Metal Pickup

This is the best pickup I have found for Grinding low end death metal. I have them on 2 guitars and they are my favorite rhythm pickup for metal. I gave it a 4 star only because these pickups do not have a lot of harmonics and they are not my first choice for lead playing. They are all low end and mids and nothing chugs better then the invader.

I knew I was looking

I knew I was looking for something high output and versatile, and this is it. It doesn't cut out any lows like some other modern guitar pickups do (especially geared toward metalheads). This is perfect for a subtractive approach to your tone profile. You've got all the frequencies and output you could ever ask for, which gives you the freedom to whittle your tone into anything you want.

Sounds awesome in the bridge

Sounds awesome in the bridge position of my custom SSH Super Strat build! I have used these before in a HH configuration. I love them. You can tell this pickup really means business. Love the chug I get from them. Great for metal. I paired it with a set of Quarter pounder single coils this time.

I have been using the Invader for a long time. My main guitar is a 1995 USA made PRS Custom 24. I fell in love with the Invader because it sounds slightly different, yet similar to the bridge pick up in my PRS. So with all my non-PRS guitars, the bridge pick up is always an Invader. While it is very well suited for metal, it is not a one trick pony. I use it for a variety of rock based genres.

Powerful set up pickups

I threw this set in a cheap Donner LP and that is now my favorite guitar to grab. I play it with a Fender Mustang GTX 100 and its sounds great on all the channels. Very easy to install, take the SD soldering course online if you haven't already! One problem I have to mention is I purchased this set from Musicians Friend the first time and believed there was a problem with one of my pickups. You see I happened to be entered in the SD soldering course at the time my pickups arrived in the mail and I was in the module that explains using a multimeter to check your electrical components. When the instructor tested the pickups he was going to install I decided to test mine as well. The neck pickup gave me a bad reading (most of you already know why) and that resulted a back and fourth between me and Musicians Friend. Ultimately I installed the bridge pickup and ordered a lone invader neck pickup from the SD website certain it would read correctly. It didn't and I was floored but I found it hard to believe I had 3 bad invader neck pickups in front of me (three? don't ask) so after MUCH digging online I discovered the answer. Apparently there is a cap wired on the neck pickup that will cause your multimeter to read "open" when testing the circuit. The guy in your video couldn't mention this situation or maybe even the paperwork for the pickup?!? Well it's a pretty good course and it's free so I shouldn't complain, it just sucks I paid so much for this set ha ha. Enjoy the pickups!

The sound is really intimidating as it looks!

Previously, I used a pair of Duncan Designed HB-102. They sound really nice on my custom Jackson Kelly. When I changed my DD to this pair of Invaders, they transform my guitar! Too much power gives from this pups but surprisingly can articulate very well under heavy distortion. I must lower my gain on my drive pedal to get a decent distortion. Not only transform my sound, but also the look of my guitar. That huge screws are my favourite parts of this pups!

IN YOUR FACE TONE FOR DAYS. I have my Invader set on 550K pots with a .033pf cap on the neck and a .022pf cap on the bridge with a big fat overkill of a treble bleed and I drown out the drummer with ease i have plenty of tone no matter where i am on the dial and with the neck N coil split its like i have a Strat On Steroids they sound amazing clean, but when its time to get down and dirty they do it like no other

Dragslayer and then some

I thought some of the other brands of high gain pickups were actually high gain..? That is until I tried this one, and believe me it is a punchy hot aggressive pickup, but has a articulate and smooth voice for lead work in spades! I really appreciate the tonality of Duncan pickups, there's no brittleness, or harsh upper mid spiking like so many other p.u.'s on the market, yet they have zero problem cutting through the mix.. All the right EQ curve's in the correct places to truly inspire the best of techniques and creativity.. job well done a⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating truly isn't high enough 👍👍

Invader pickups

I've had an Invader pickup on my Les Paul in the bridge position for over thirty years, and it still sound amazingly awesome! I decided to put one in the neck position on a newer guitar, and it is just as articulate, crisp and sweet sounding! Eventually, these pickups will be "invading" all my guitars, in every position.
