Description

Want the focused mid bite and unique attack of a P-90, but have an instrument routed for humbuckers? You need a humbucker sized P90 Phat Cat Set. The Phat Cat is a true single-coil P90 Soapbar retrofitted under a humbucker cover for use in humbucker-equipped guitars. We originally developed this pickup in the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop for Hamer Guitars, but eventually the demand became so great that we moved it to regular production.

The Phat Cats give you all the authentic grit and growl that you’d expect from a great vintage P90 Soapbar in the bridge position, and the authentic P90 bounce and sparkle in the neck position. Chords have bright, ringing harmonic overtones while solos have that classic P90 cut and edge. We use two Alnico 2 bar magnets to give you more sustain and a compressed attack, while the metal covers provide more shielding and noise reduction than standard soapbar covers.

Other appointments include a nickel silver bottom plate, single-conductor braided hookup wire and vacuum wax potting for squeal free operation. The neck model is RW/RP, reverse wind reverse polarity, from the bridge pickup to provide noiseless operation when used together. The Phat Cat humbucker size P90 pickups are hand built in Santa Barbara, CA.

Transformed my SG into a new guitar!

I have several humbucker/humbucker guitars and wanted a change. I put these in my 2005 Gibson SG Standard and it's a brand new guitar. I'm new to P90's, I've always been a humbucker guy. I recently purchased a LP Junior with a SD Antiquity P90 in the bridge and a Tele with a SD Antiquity P90 in the neck. They both sound amazing so gear math told me I needed a guitar with 2 x P90's! The Phat Cats are surprisingly brighter than the Antiquity's but I really like them so far in the SG. Seymour Duncan knows the tone I want; kinda scary lol.

Brought New LIfe To My Guitar

I put these into an off-brand guitar called a Sanatoga. It had great wood, looks beautiful, but sounded terrible. Dropping in Phat Cats has rejuvenated a forgotten guitar from my collection allowing me to see what it can do. Quick rewire, replacing all pots and switch, and adding the Phat Cats has given this Tiger's Eye a growl I didn't expect when I first plugged it in. These give that classic P90 growl and spit in humbucker sized spaces. Such a genius idea, and I'm glad I made the switch.

Wide range.

I bought a 2020 LP special tribute that had these in it. Dude, these things scream! I play everything from modern metal, doom metal, pop punk and even some shoegaze/ MW emo. These pickups cover all that ground and then some. Incredibly responsive to rolling the volume down to clean up, even when the volume is back they keep just a subtle bite to them. They love picking dynamics! (really one of those tone is in the fingers type pickups. They don't color you so much as they facilitate your style.) Them and my rv100mkii w/ well broke in emi legends are a match made in heaven. If you want to have a guitar that can do everything you need decent to great, pick these up.

Best P-90 pickups on this

Best P-90 pickups on this plain!!! I installed Phat-Cats on three of my stage guitar in the neck position; great for clean punchy sounds, but can kick A$$ with overdrive or Distortion. I have an SG I mocked up as a Monkey SG (Tony Iommi) with a Phat-Cat in Neck and Bridge for a fraction of the price it would have cost me to buy the signature model from Gibson... (I don't work for this company) but, People take my word for it Seymour Ducan is the way to go. Now get out there and Rock!!!! Thanks SD. Joe M.

Finally got these bad boys hooked up today in a hand built guitar! I had some trouble with the electronics since it’s not something I do much, but after my struggles I looked back to the install instructions and see where I made my mistakes. Next round I will trust the wiring diagram! The pups sound great and I’m looking forward to really hearing them scream!

Phat Cat in bridge position, Jackson Dinky

I’d been thinking I need a new guitar, thinner Tele sound. Then I played a Tele Thinline in the studio with P90’s and loved it. My modded 96 Jackson Dinky came with a set of Dirty Fingers- but I needed something brighter at the bridge. Seymour Duncan’s have been my pickup choice for years and when my Luthier suggested a Phat Cat I was all in- dang I really really love the bright but not too thin sound! Great job Seymour Duncan!

I put this Phat Cat P90 in the neck position of my 2 humbucker Schecter Banshee. I don't like wooly or woofy neck pickups. I favor more of a single coil sound. I just got this pickup installed yesterday, but at home and live at church, it sounded great!

Phat Cats in a 2017 Gibson Les Paul Plus

Hello all! My Les Paul came with Classic 57’s. I love the guitar, as I always dreamed f having a L.P. Honestly, I don’t play ii much but when I do, I enjoy it. It’s never really had that growl I expect a Lester up have. I have really come to enjoy P-90’s in recent years and as such, figured I’d give my baby an upgrade. WOW!!! Man, this baby has some big ole fangs now! Very musical, raw rock when wide open on the bridge, dark and twisted on the neck. Highly recommended if you want your baby to snarl.

Plenty of growl

These pickups are awesome, I have them installed in my Jay Turser Les Paul. They sound punchy and could sound different when you raise or lower the pickups. When the pickups are raised the sound has a natural crunch to it it even on a clean channel. Especially when you hit the strings hard with your attack. When lowered the pickups sound really good for clean guitar, that need less bite and crunch. I like the sound and use it for rockabilly and blues in the middle position. These pickups really articulate each note, so if you are recording or make mistakes you can hear it. With distortion these pickups handle metal and distortion fine. I wanted the sound of p90's with out getting p90's routed in my les paul these are worth the money.

Phat cat- more like Hell Cat!!! It’s mean!

I bought this pickup for a les Paul Junior that someone routed for a humbucker. So I wanted to convert it back. So I got this and a 50s wiring harness. This pickup is amazing! It snarls like a p 90 should. It cleans up amazingly. It’s a fire breather, I’ve found this pickup really like Marshall amps. It loves my JCM 800 and it like orange amps as well. Loads of dynamic range from this pickup! Pick one up you won’t regret it!

Phat Cats in Ibanez Artist

I have had a pair of Phat Cats in a Japanese Ibanez Artist from the early '80s for many years now, but recently pulled the guitar out of the cupboard after playing another guitar exclusively for a couple of years. The Phat Cats had me grinning from the start. Articulate, highly responsive to pick attack, clean up with volume knob brilliantly, classic rock nirvana.i have tried other HB sized P90s in another similar guitar and got nothing remotely close to what the Phat Cats can do. Don't take the risk of you are thinking of switching to HB sized P90s ... look no further than SD's brilliant take.

OMG what a difference!

I have a Les Paul Special II. It came with factory humbuckers. At low volume, like in quiet jazz, I liked the sound. But as soon as I turn up the volume the signal splatters and gets muddy. These phat cats changed all that for the better. They can be extremely clean and sweet. But when I kick in the tube screamer...step aside. It roars now. I am happy to announce I am a certified sonic menace now, just ask my neighbor. These pickups remind me of the noiseless Strat pickups. The can sing sweetly or growl and snarl at you. I think it was well worth the money. I have a different, better axe now. Thanks Seymore!

Packs a punch

Put this in the neck position of my Epiphone SG, and it packs quite a punch. Sounds beautiful, and easy to install. The mounting bracket was a little small, and may have been for a Les Paul, but I got it to work it and sounds killer. It's significantly more powerful than the bridge humbucker, looks like I'll just have to get something to match it.

Super punchy midrange, if you play aggressively enough!

I've got a Phat Cat loaded into the bridge of an Ltd with an Evertune and play predominantly Rock. It's perfect for tight, kick in the teeth, aggressive mids, but you really need to dig in to get the pickup to really shine. The Evertune comes in useful for that, letting me hammer the strings while maintaining tuning. If I'd put them in a guitar with a floating bridge however, I probably couldn't have gotten away with it.

Phat Cat ,Great Sound !

I have them in my Epiphone SG. It was equipped with Humbuckers, but i was never happy with the Sound. Now its like a different Guitar ! All that Sounds I hat in my Head , fantastic clean sound , dirty and crunchy when ever i want it .and fast Attack ! All with no hum! Great for Blues , Bluesrock and Rock the way I like it. They got enough Power , even in a SG with that thin Body . I Love them !
