By early 1964, Fender had started to build their Strat® pickups with gray flatwork, and these gray bottom pickups were known for a notably punchy sound and higher output. Finding a pre-CBS Strat® with these rare pickups can be a challenge.

However, as Joe Bonamassa discovered, sometimes looking beyond a guitar’s originality can lead to uncovering a truly exceptional example. Joe’s 1964 Stratocaster® started its life with a three-tone sunburst finish and stock gray-bottom pickups, but was refinished with a unique “Greenburst”, which instantly captivated Joe. With the powerful sounding pickups, great playability, and striking look, Joe knew it was “an instant star”.

Lucky for guitar players everywhere, Joe Bonamassa has once again collaborated with the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop to offer the magic sound of one of his favorite instruments through a new set of signature gray bottom Strat® pickups. The Joe Bonamassa “Greenburst” Stratocaster® Set is made with period-correct wiring and staggered alnico 5 magnets. The gray bottom flatwork is pad printed with Joe’s signature, and the first 500 sets include limited edition packaging and a certificate of authenticity signed by Joe and Seymour W. Duncan.

Once she began managing the Custom Shop and building pickups for some of the biggest guitarists in music, her dream came true. MJ was afforded the opportunity to wind a set of humbuckers for Peter. He has since used these pickups in countless recordings and performances over the years. The Frampton Comes Alive Humbucker set is built to those same specs with Alnico 2 magnets and a vintage output for Peter’s dynamic, stadium-filling sound. We started with carefully analyzing the pickups in the bass of Lemmy Kilmister and then made them even ruder – that’s right, even more attack and punch – while also making sure they had plenty of clarity under heavy distortion. The results are three unique pickups, each hand-built in the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop and available in individual neck, middle or bridge models, or as a complete set in two or three pickup combimations. Available in either a direct mount for Lemmy Signature Basses or pickguard mount for traditional Rickebacker® basses.

Josh Smith is well-known for his soulful and nuanced approach to playing blues, jazz, country, rock, and everything in between. He trusts Tele®-style guitars for any gig, session, or world tour, and when he needed a custom pickup set with responsiveness dialed to his playing style, he came to Seymour Duncan. His signature Flat V pickup set features a unique blend of Alnico 2 and Alnico 4 magnets in the bridge, and Alnico 3 magnets in the neck which provide Josh an uncompressed tone that responds to his most expressive playing. Brandon Ellis has become known as one of the most innovative guitarists in heavy music, and his work with The Black Dahlia Murder shows there is no limit to his virtuosity. Performing lightning-fast arpeggio sweeps, aggressive tremolo picking, and propulsive down-tuned riffs requires guitar tone that can keep up the pace and cut through the mix. While experimenting with different Seymour Duncan pickups over his career, Brandon’s sound became defined by our Parallel Axis™ humbuckers. This line of pickups features two slotted pole pieces per string, which removes distortion from the string’s vibration pattern. This ensures better note separation and extended sustain by creating a decentralized magnetic field.

Dabbling in pickup design himself, Brandon concocted a hybrid pickup combining two of his favorite Parallel Axis™ models: The North coil of a Crazy 8 and the hotter South coil of a Parallel Axis™ Trembucker Distortion, along with the Alnico 2 bar magnet from an RTM.

The result is the Dyad, a high output Humbucker with a sizzly bite and a super articulate pick attack that perfectly suited Brandon’s needs. Despite being a single bridge pickup, the Dyad offers more tones than meets the eye. Flipping the pickup upside down, in Brandon’s words “offers a chewier, mid-range focused sound for guitarists looking for more body out of their instrument in standard tunings.”

The Dyad is available in humbucker and trembucker spacing, and comes standard with dual Seymour Duncan logos facing inward in tribute to Brandon’s original homemade design.
