Description

The Pickup Booster is for when you love the sound of your guitar but you need a little more: more output, more gain or just a little more control over your guitar’s voice without changing its fundamental character. Think of it as sending your guitar to the gym. A true-bypass pedal with a class A, low-noise circuit design, Pickup Booster can be used to dial in the tone you need for every situation. It will emphasize your guitar’s natural tone while adding some muscle and fatness. It uses a discrete push-pull output stage for increased drive capability. Even with the Gain knob down to 0dB, your signal chain will sound cleaner – including long cable runs, essentially acting as a buffer on your pedalboard.

Need a humbucker sound out of that vintage Strat? The Resonance Switch makes the pedal interact directly with your pickups, allowing your single coils to emulate either a chunky humbucker sound perfect for classic rock or blues or a high-output tone for rip-roaring solos. If you’re using humbuckers, Position 1 will give your guitar a little more ‘teeth,’ while Position 2 gives you a hint of that ‘cocked-wah’ tone filter vibe which is great for leads.

Like all of our pedals, Pickup Booster is designed and assembled at our Santa Barbara, California factory by the same team responsible for our legendary pickups.

Sample Settings

  • Clean, Buffered Boost

This setting will give a transparent boost to your signal to drive the rest of your pedalboard with greater signal headroom and no loss of high-end, or use at the end of your pedal chain to drive long cable runs back to your amp.
  • Fattened Strat

Setting the Resonance Switch to the “1” position will shift the resonant peak of a single-coil pickup down, thickening up your tone. Putting the Gain control up to the 12 o’clock position will let you drive the front-end of the amp for more grit. This setting really lets the intensity of your playing come through, staying clean until you dig in and bring out the sweet harmonics of your amp.
  • Maximum Beef

This setting, with the Resonance Switch on “2” and the Gain control all the way up, gives a single-coil the fatness of a high-output humbucker along with the full push of your amp’s preamp stage, resulting in a meaty, saturated tone. Great for beefing up your solos!
  • Fattened Humbucker

This setting, with the Resonance Switch on “0” and the Gain control all the way up, gives maximum saturation and sustain to a humbucker.

More than just a booster

Of the many clean boosters that have come and gone, this is my favourite, its my first choice and Im rarely happy with my sound without it first in my sgnal chain. The 3 way resonance switch is so much more musical to my ear than eq or tone controls. The way the two settings add increasing capacitance to your signal perfectly replicates the loading effects of those long curly or just high cap leads used in the 60s and 70s. I love the tone of my low capacitance guitar cables, and they sound great in most circumstances. However some vintage Fenders and Marshalls sound better with a higher capacitance cable, with the SD Pickup Booster I can just move the slider switch and those more unpleasant high frequencies tend to smooth out in a way that eq and tone controls cant quite simulate imho.

Why I love my Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster. A long 52+ year guitar love story.

Back in 1968, with two of my eleven brothers and sisters, we decided to create a rock band to play The Animals, The Beatles, &The Rolling Stones music. We started with cheap no brabnd Japanese guitars we bought in Laredo Texas. One year later we bought a Japanese single coil Teisco bass guitar. In 1971, we worked hard to buy good brand guitars for the rock band we the called Sound Core. By that time, it was very expensive to buy US guitarsin Mexico: the instruments were more than twice more expensive. We decided to buy a Gibson EB3 bass guitar, a Gibson Sg Std. guitar and a Fender Telecaster guitar at Caldwell Music Co. in San Antonio Texas. We chose these two guitars and a bass guitar because of to the range of sounds we could get out of them. A good friend of mine whose group disbanded back in 1970, was selling his Rickenbacker 360 natural maple stereo guitar with vibrato, which we bought for my brother. So we had an SG guitar and a Rickenbacker 3605. The best of the two worlds: sparkling, crisp, clean chime sound of Rickenbacker single coils and powerful fat tone of the Gibson humbuckers to play White Room by Cream. Nevertheless, these sounds were in two different guitars... (I still have both of them). In 1992 I bought a Telecaster Custom. Each time I used the bridge single coil pickup it had terrible feedback. Looking for a solution for the feedback, I found the Seymour Duncan Little 59 Tele ST59-1 Bridge Pickup, which I could use as a single coil /split) or as a humbucker. Besides, some years later I read about Jerry Garcia using an Alembic Stratoblaster booster and I tried to buy one. Vedry hard to find, way too expensive for me then, and besides I would have to modify my guitars.... When I was about to buy the Little59 Seymour Duncan Tele pickup, I discovered with great joy the Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster (SFX-01, the first version of it). This way I could use my Telecaster’s custom and my Rickenbacker’s single coil guitars, and also have (more or less) a Jerry Garcia’s “Stratoblaster” sound boost without changing a single part of them. Since then I have the best of these two worlds: humbucker and single coils, plus a versatile range of sounds, colors (RESONANCE SWITCH) and powerful boost options with my Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster. I wish to buy the 18v version soon to have that huge headroom they say. We´ve been playing in Sound Core Brass continously for more than 52 years. Beside 5 brothers and 3 good friends, two very talented nepheus joined the band 8 years ago. That’s why I love my Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster. Cheers. Emilio.

Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster

I have had this product for a couple years and If something happened to it I would buy another one. I have a 2012 Strat deluxe with N3 pickups. It makes the single coils sound way better. Before I bought this I was going to try a humbucker in the bridge position but then I seen this product and figured I would give it a try. Best move I could have made. I am keeping the single coils. It makes everything more full and warmer sounding. The humbucker positions sound good especially for leads but I do use position 1 the vintage humbucker setting for rhythm. The middle boost position is good if you want to preserve the original sound but just want a fuller sound with more gain. It gives new life to a strat. Great Pedal
