Pro Active™ PJ

The Pro Active PJ is a balanced pair of active precision jazz bass pickups engineered for bigger, more aggressive tones with a modern look and feel. This set excels at being clear and articulate without being brittle. The low end is there, but the lower mid frequencies are king of this pair, providing the right balance of attack and authority to sit in the mix just right. They have a modern no pole piece look, and increased output.

Hand made in Santa Barbara, CA, the Pro Active PJ pickups use ceramic magnets, and come with 3-conductor lead wire.

Pro Active™ Jazz Bass

These active Jazz Bass pickups are responsive and clear, boasting a dynamic response without being harsh or brittle. These pickups bring a modern punch and attack to the party with a brilliant high end and smooth lows. The midrange is the real star here, with a detailed low-mid bump that makes the tone open up. The design is based on the old Seymour Duncan Active EQ “Switch” pickups. While we no longer build them with the little switches, we took the most popular switch settings and “hard wired” it for convenience. Has a modern look with a no poles cover.

Pro Active™ P-Bass

Here’s a modern take on the active P bass pickup. It boasts a wide tonal range with a sharper attack and more punch, yet without the brittleness that is typical of some active pickups. Harder rock players love the aggressive feel of this pickup. If you are a fingerstyle player, you’ll appreciate the response as well.

NYC Bass™ 4 String

We originally designed these pickups for one of the world’s finest handcrafted basses. The NYC 4 and NYC 5 use a dual coil J-type pickup design with a double row of exposed Alnico 2 pole pieces. The four-conductor cable allows for three wiring modes for a wide variety of tonal options. Wire the pickup in parallel mode for a noise-free single coil sound with added body and weight; a balanced response that speaks with authority. Wire it in series mode for high output with maximum punch and fullness without any hum. Or, wire it in single coil mode for true vintage Jazz Bass sound.

We designed the neck so you can get hum free tone when using one coil in the neck and one in the bridge. The Alnico 2 rod pole pieces provide a punchy and focused tone with a natural and smooth upper midrange. Compared to an active soapbar, the tone is warmer and more organic. Use our STC series of Tone Controls, or any 3-way mini toggle switches to access all three voices. Or if you want just 2 options and a clean looking bass, then any standard push/pull pot will work. We include full wiring directions for all the options or see our wiring schematic on our site.

Designed for 4 or 5 string basses, and available in neck or bridge or as a calibrated neck and bridge set. And fits into any bass with a standard DC 40 rout. Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, the NYC 4 and 5 use Alnico 2 magnets and come with a 4-conductor lead wire.

Active 5 String

For those looking to move to an active J pickup configuration, this is the place to begin. The neck pickup blends definition and punch in one powerful pickup with a brilliant response and clarity to a low B. Blend this pickup with the bridge model for the complete package and a new tonal palette for your 5-string.

A fully discrete, ultra quiet, 9-volt preamp delivers low impedance output with excellent dynamic range. These pickups use blades instead of individual pole pieces, and so they can be used for both 4-string and 5-string Jazz Basses. They will accommodate string spacings up to 3.10″ (78.7mm) for bridge pickup and 3.00″ (76.2mm) for neck pickup.

NOTE: these are traditional sized 5-string Jazz Bass pickups and will not retrofit Fender Jazz V models. Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, our Active 5-String Jazz Bass pickups use a ceramic bar magnet, and come with a 3-conductor lead wire.

5 String Stack®

For those wanting an accurate, even feel from their pickups, the passive 5 String Stack noiseless Jazz Bass pickups offer vintage output and a flat response with their blade design. The neck pickup has a subtle, warm character, which as a stand-alone replacement is great. The real magic happens when paired with the bridge pickup, which is wired for a little more definition and snap. When both neck and bridge are used together, you get a great tone with a slight dip in the mid-range; perfect for slap-style playing.

This pickup uses a cover that is the size of traditional 5-string Fender Jazz Bass, which mean that, because it uses blades, it can be used on either 4-string or 5-string instruments. It will NOT directly retrofit a modern Fender Jazz V however. Will accommodate string spacings up to 2.9″ (73.6mm) for both neck and bridge pickups. Combine the neck with the 5-string bridge position Jazz Bass Stack for a perfectly matched set.

Hand built in Santa Barbara, CA, the 5-string Jazz Bass Stack noiseless Jazz Bass pickups use a ceramic bar magnet, 4-conductor lead-wire, and are vacuum wax potted for squeal free performance.

Hot Stack® Jazz Bass

We took the noiseless Classic Stack and ratcheted everything up another notch. For the Hot Stack Jazz Bass, we increased the output and thickened up the midrange response, which gives rock tones an added push without getting harsh. The slightly overwound bridge model pairs perfectly with the Hot Stack Jazz Bass neck pickup, for a powerful matched set. This is everything you love about the world-famous Jazz Bass tone, but with more oomph.

(Note: The Hot Stack Jazz Bass is based on the slightly wider American-sized Jazz Bass bridge pickup. If you have a Mexican Standard Jazz Bass, you will likely need to use two neck pickups, as the pickup slots are both neck-sized on that model.)

Rex Brown PJ System

The man who held down the low-end in Pantera knows bass tone. Nowadays, Rex’s style runs the gamut from soulful blues-based rock, to the rib-cage rattling metal he’s so well known for. Rex recently fell in love with our Quarter Pound PJ set, but also wanted the power and versatility of our most aggressive active pre-amp and EQ, and the ability to quickly and easily engage it with a push/push volume pot…the Rex Brown Quarter Pound PJ System was born!

Classic Stack® Jazz Bass

We captured that great Jazz Bass tone from the definitive ’60s era, in a noiseless pickup design. The Classic Stack Jazz Bass is one of our most popular pickups, and with good reason. It has everything a Jazz Bass pickup should: presence without being bitter, smooth response, and a classic low-end bump. It captures the same great tone as our Vintage Jazz Bass single-coil, but without the annoying 60-cycle hum.

This bridge model is slightly overwound to make output balancing easier, for a perfect match with the Classic Stack Jazz Bass neck pickup. (NOTE: This bridge pickup is the slightly wider American-sized Jazz Bass version. If you have a Mexican Standard Jazz Bass, you will likely need to use two neck pickups, as the pickup slots are both neck-sized on that model.)
